عندما صعدت إلى الطائرة المتجهة إلى برلين هذا الصيف، افترضت أنني أعود إلى مدينة أعرفها جيداً. ففي النهاية لم تكن هذه زيارتي الأولى للعاصمة الألمانية. تمتد علاقتي ببرلين لأكثر من خمسين عاماً: رحلات الطفولة من هانوفر عبر ألمانيا الشرقية في سبعينيات القرن الماضي، ومغامرات الدراسة خلال سنوات الحرب الباردة في الثمانينيات، وزياراتي اللاحقة بصفتي أستاذاً للعمارة، وذكريات لا تُحصى لمدينة بدت دائماً وكأنها موجودة في مكان ما بين الواقع والخيال. وقد رويت بعضاً من تلك الذكريات في مدونة سابقة بعنوان: برلين: بين الأطلال والمتمردين والملائكة

لكن المدن نادراً ما تبقى على حالها. والأهم من ذلك أننا نحن أيضاً لا نبقى كما كنا

وصلت إلى مطار براندنبورغ مساءً. كان سائق الأوبر عراقياً. حتى قبل أن أراه تعرفت إلى نبرة العربية المميزة في حديثه الهاتفي. سرنا عبر شوارع ضواحي هادئة حتى وصلنا إلى الفندق في منطقة شلاختنزيه. كان مكتب الاستقبال مغلقاً، وبدلاً من ذلك طُلب مني عبر الهاتف إدخال رمز في صندوق معدني صغير. سقط المفتاح في يدي. كانت لحظة برلينية بامتياز: فعالة، غير شخصية، لكنها تحمل شيئاً من السحر الغامض

في وقت لاحق من تلك الأمسية توجهت إلى مطعم إيطالي قريب يطل على ساحة مكسيكو بلاتس. كانت وجبة لا تُنسى: زيتون، خبز، زيت زيتون، شريحة لحم بتلو، كريم بروليه، وأخيراً كأس ليمونسيلو قدمها النادل مجاناً. وبينما كنت أجلس أراقب المساء وهو ينقضي من حولي، وجدت نفسي أفكر ليس في برلين، بل في سبب وجودي فيها. أعادتني عاصفة مطرية مفاجئة إلى الواقع وأنا أحاول العودة إلى الفندق من دون أن أغرق تحت المطر

في اليوم التالي كنت سأقدم محاضرة في مركز الدراسات الشرقية الحديثة حول كتابي «الحداثة (أو الحداثات) العربية: المدن والتاريخ والثقافة». وعلى الرغم من أن الكتاب يتناول مدناً متعددة في العالم العربي، من الرباط وبيروت إلى الرياض ودبي، فإن الفصل الخاص بالقاهرة كان يشغل تفكيري أكثر من غيره

في ذلك الوقت لم أكن أدرك أن برلين نفسها ستمنحني طريقة جديدة للتفكير في القاهرة

في ظهيرة اليوم التالي سرت من الفندق إلى المركز في رحلة ممتعة استغرقت نحو أربعين دقيقة عبر شوارع سكنية خضراء تصطف على جانبيها فيلات أنيقة. كان المبنى نفسه مختبئاً خلف الحدائق والمباني الفرعية، واضطررت إلى البحث قليلاً قبل أن أعثر على المدخل. هناك التقيت بزملاء قدامى وجدد. استقبلتني أولريكه فرايتاغ، مديرة المركز، بحرارة. كما وصل خالد، صديق قديم تعود صداقتنا إلى سنوات الدراسة العليا في الولايات المتحدة، ثم إلى سنوات العمل المشترك في جامعة الإمارات. وهناك أيضاً صالح، الباحث الكيني الذي التقيته مصادفة في ساحة المبنى الخارجية؛ سرعان ما وجدنا أنفسنا نتحدث عن المدن والعمران قبل أن يدفعنا المطر إلى الاحتماء في الداخل

ضم الحضور باحثين لم أرهم منذ سنوات طويلة، من بينهم شتيفن فيبل وكاترينا برومبر اللذان دعواني إلى برلين قبل أكثر من خمسة عشر عاماً. كما شارك آخرون عبر الإنترنت من أماكن مختلفة حول العالم، بمن فيهم طلاب وزملاء سابقون مثل لبنى شقفة وصوفيا شويري

كان النقاش الذي أعقب المحاضرة حيوياً ومثيراً للتفكير. وقد بقي سؤال واحد يلاحقني طويلاً بعد انتهاء اللقاء: لماذا، كما سأل أحد الحاضرين، ما زلنا نستخدم مصطلح «الحداثة»؟ هل ما زال قادراً على تفسير التحولات التي تشهدها المدن المعاصرة؟ أم ينبغي أن نتحدث بدلاً من ذلك عن النيوليبرالية أو العولمة أو ربما ما يصفه كثيرون في العالم العربي اليوم بـ «الدبيَنة»؟

كان سؤالاً مشروعاً، وما زلت أفكر فيه حتى اليوم

لكن ما أثار انتباهي أكثر من أي شيء آخر هو أن معظم الأسئلة لم تكن تتعلق بالعمارة في حد ذاتها. كانت تدور حول التعايش والانتماء والذاكرة والطريقة التي تستوعب بها المدن الاختلاف. وبأثر رجعي، أدركت أن هذه القضايا نفسها ستعود للظهور في اليوم التالي بينما كنت أتجول في أحياء برلين

في صباح اليوم التالي استقليت سيارة إلى نويكولن للقاء طالبة دراسات عليا تعمل على موضوع الحداثة القطرية. التقينا في مقهى «جوار»، وهو مقهى مجتمعي يحمل اسماً عربياً يعبر عن حسن الجوار. وبين فناجين القهوة تحدثنا عن العمارة والمؤسسات الثقافية والتحولات الحضرية. وبعد فترة قصيرة انضم إلينا خالد، وما إن انتهى لقائي مع الطالبة حتى انطلقنا سيراً على الأقدام في شوارع الحي المحيط

كانت نويكولن، على الأرجح، برلين التي أردت أن أراها أكثر من أي مكان آخر

بدا الحي مألوفاً على الفور. اللافتات العربية تملأ واجهات المتاجر. رائحة اللحم المشوي تنبعث من المطاعم. مقاهي الأرجيلة تمتد إلى الأرصفة. والحوارات تنتقل بسلاسة بين الألمانية والعربية والتركية والإنجليزية. في بعض اللحظات لم أشعر أنني في ألمانيا بقدر ما شعرت أنني أسير في جزء من بيروت أو دمشق أو عمّان أو القاهرة نُقل بطريقة ما إلى شمال أوروبا

توقفنا لتناول الغداء في مطعم عزّام، وهو مطعم متواضع لكنه يعج بالحركة. حولنا كانت العائلات تتناول الغداء، والطلاب يطيلون الجلوس مع قهوتهم، وسائقو التوصيل يدخلون ويخرجون باستمرار. شاركنا أطباق الكبة والسجق والحمص والتبولة فيما كنا نتحدث عن التحولات التي تشهدها برلين. وبعد ذلك واصلنا السير مروراً بمطعم «كبابجي مصطفي النباتي» الشهير، حيث امتد طابور طويل من الزبائن على طول الرصيف

ما أثار اهتمامي لم يكن مجرد وجود المهاجرين، بل مدى اندماجهم في الحياة اليومية للمدينة. لم تبدُ برلين مدينة مقسمة إلى عوالم منفصلة. بل بدت وكأن مجتمعات متعددة تتداخل وتتقاطع بطريقة طبيعية ومريحة

ومن نويكولن واصلنا السير نحو كرويتسبرغ. قبل عقود كان الحي مرتبطاً أساساً بالجالية التركية في برلين. أتذكر مروري به في زمن لم تكن فيه أي مظاهر للترف. كان حياً عمالياً يقف على أعتاب التحول. أما اليوم فقد أصبح مرادفاً لعمليات التحسين الحضري والارتقاء الطبقي. المقاهي الجديدة تقف إلى جانب متاجر المهاجرين القديمة. والمتاجر العصرية تتجاور مع الأسواق التقليدية، بما في ذلك سوق داخلي للأطعمة يقدم تشكيلة واسعة من المأكولات العالمية. الجدران المغطاة بالغرافيتي تقف إلى جوار مبانٍ جرى ترميمها بعناية

كانت التناقضات واضحة

لكنها بقيت مرئية

لم يكن هناك شيء مخفي. ولم يكن هناك ما يبدو معقماً أو مصقولاً بصورة مصطنعة

رافقتني هذه الملاحظة ونحن نتابع سيرنا نحو كورفورستندام ثم إلى يوروبا سنتر ومحطة بانهوف تسو. كانت هذه أماكن متجذرة بعمق في ذاكرتي الشخصية عن برلين. ففي الثمانينيات كنت أقضي أمسيات طويلة أتجول في هذه الشوارع. أتذكر أجواء الحرب الباردة، وإحساس عدم اليقين، وبالطبع كتاب «نحن أطفال محطة حديقة الحيوان» الذي حوّل المنطقة إلى رمز للإدمان والاغتراب والانحدار الحضري

لقد تغير الكثير منذ ذلك الحين. فمبنى «بيكيني برلين»، الذي كان يوماً مجرد مبنى مكاتب عادي، أصبح مجمعاً تجارياً أنيقاً، وتحول سطحه إلى شرفة عامة مزروعة تطل على المدينة. ومع ذلك، وعلى الرغم من هذه التحولات، ظل الحي محتفظاً بصلة واضحة بماضيه

لقد تغيرت برلين

لكنها لم تمحُ نفسها

وهذا فرق جوهري

في وقت لاحق من ذلك اليوم، وبينما كنت أجلس مع خالد نتبادل الأحاديث والذكريات عن مصر والإمارات وأيام الدراسة العليا، بدأت أفهم أخيراً لماذا بدت هذه الزيارة مختلفة عن زياراتي السابقة إلى برلين

كانت المدينة تدفعني إلى التفكير في القاهرة

أحد الموضوعات المركزية التي يتناولها فصل القاهرة في كتاب الحداثة (أو الحداثات) العربية هو العلاقة بين التحديث والمحو. فالقاهرة كانت دائماً مدينة قائمة على التناقضات. المستوطنات غير الرسمية تتجاور مع المجتمعات السكنية المغلقة. الأحياء التاريخية تتعايش مع مشاريع التطوير العقاري المضاربية. والحياة الحضرية اليومية تتكشف في فضاءات يتجاهلها المخططون أو يسعون إلى إزالتها. وتنبع حيوية المدينة تحديداً من هذه التجاورات

ومع ذلك، فإن كثيراً من التدخلات العمرانية المعاصرة، من إعادة تطوير مثلث ماسبيرو إلى بناء العاصمة الإدارية الجديدة، تسعى إلى حل هذه التناقضات عبر الهدم وإعادة التوطين والضبط المكاني

وأثناء تجوالي في برلين أدركت أن المشكلة ليست في وجود التناقضات بحد ذاتها. فجميع المدن العظيمة مليئة بالتناقضات. السؤال الحقيقي هو: كيف تتعامل المدن مع هذه التناقضات؟

تبدو برلين مرتاحة بصورة لافتة للسماح لهذه التناقضات بالبقاء مرئية. فالأحياء الثرية تتجاور مع أحياء أكثر تواضعاً. والمجتمعات المهاجرة تحتفظ بحضور واضح في المشهد الحضري. وآثار الأزمنة السابقة تستمر في الظهور حتى وسط مشاريع إعادة التطوير. المدينة تتغير باستمرار، لكنها نادراً ما تشعر بالحاجة إلى محو ما سبقها

أما القاهرة فتبدو وكأنها تتحرك بصورة متزايدة في الاتجاه المعاكس

فالتعقيد يصبح مشكلة ينبغي حلها

و العشوائية تصبح شيئاً يجب التخلص منه

والذاكرة تصبح أمراً يجب التحكم فيه

والاختلاف يصبح قضية ينبغي تسويتها

وبالطبع، فإن برلين ليست مدينة مثالية. فهي تواجه تحدياتها الخاصة: ارتفاع أسعار السكن، والإقصاء المكاني، والتوترات الاجتماعية، والنقاشات المحتدمة حول الهجرة والهوية. ومع ذلك، فإن ما أثار إعجابي هو استعداد المدينة لاحتضان حالة اللااكتمال

غالباً ما تبدو برلين مدينة غير منجزة

وربما تكمن قوتها بالتحديد في ذلك

في مساء يومي الأخير سرت عبر الغابة باتجاه بحيرة شلاختن. كان المطر قد توقف إلى حد كبير. كانت المياه ساكنة، والأضواء تتلألأ بين الأشجار على الضفة المقابلة. وفي الأفق ظهر هدفي الأخير: مطعم «فيشرهوته»، حيث كانت وجبة بحرية شهية بانتظاري

بدلاً من ذلك، تشكلت ذكرياتي من محادثات مع باحثين، ووجبات شاركتها مع أصدقاء، ولقاءات مع مهاجرين، وتجوال في أحياء المدينة، وتأملات في مدن تقع بعيداً عن ألمانيا

وربما تكون هذه هي الرسالة الحقيقية التي تعلمتها من برلين. فالمدن لا تُعرَّف بمعالمها الأثرية أو أبراجها أو مخططاتها العمرانية الكبرى. إنها تُعرَّف بقدرتها على استيعاب الاختلاف، واحتضان الذاكرة، والسماح لتواريخ متعددة بأن تتعايش في المكان نفسه. وتكمن حيويتها ليس في الكمال، بل في قدرتها على أن تبقى منفتحة ومتعددة الطبقات وغير مكتملة. وبينما كنت أنظر للمرة الأخيرة إلى مياه بحيرة شلاختن الداكنة، وجدت نفسي أفكر في القاهرة مرة أخرى

ليس في قاهرة البطاقات البريدية أو السرديات الرسمية

بل في قاهرة التناقضات والارتجالات واللقاءات اليومية

القاهرة التي ما زالت صامضة رغم المحاولات المتكررة لإعادة تشكيلها وإعادة صنعها

لم تمنحني برلين إجابات. لكنها ساعدتني على توضيح السؤال

ماذا لو كان مستقبل المدن يعتمد بدرجة أقل على إزالة التناقضات، وبدرجة أكبر على تعلم كيفية العيش معها؟

Yet cities rarely remain the same. More importantly, neither do we.

Yet cities rarely remain the same. More importantly, neither do we.

I arrived at Brandenburg Airport in the evening. My Uber driver was Iraqi. Even before I saw him, I recognized the unmistakable cadence of his Arabic as he spoke on the phone. The drive took us through quiet suburban streets until we reached my hotel in Schlachtensee. The reception desk was closed. Instead, I was instructed by phone to enter a code into a lockbox. A key dropped into my hand. It was an oddly Berlin moment—efficient, impersonal, yet somehow charming. Later that evening I walked to a nearby Italian restaurant overlooking Mexico Platz. The meal was memorable: olives, bread, olive oil, a veal fillet, crème brûlée, and finally a complimentary limoncello offered by the waiter. Sitting there, watching the evening unfold around me, I found myself thinking not about Berlin but about the purpose of my visit. A sudden downpour brought me back to reality and trying to find a way back to the hotel without getting soaked.

The following day I would be delivering a lecture at the Zentrum Moderner Orient (ZMO) on my book Arab Modernism(s): Cities, History and Culture. Although the book examines cities across the Arab world—from Rabat and Beirut to Riyadh and Dubai—it was the Cairo chapter that occupied my thoughts.

At the time, I did not yet realize that Berlin itself would provide a new way of thinking about Cairo. The following afternoon I walked from my hotel to ZMO, a pleasant forty-minute journey through leafy residential streets lined with elegant villas. The institute itself was hidden behind gardens and secondary buildings, requiring a bit of searching before I finally located the entrance. There I met colleagues old and new. Ulrike Freitag, the institute’s director, welcomed me warmly. Khaled, a longtime friend whose friendship stretches back to our graduate student years in the United States and later our time together at UAE University, arrived shortly before the lecture. And of course Saleh, a Kenyan researcher whom I met by chance in the forecourt; we got to talking about cities and urbanism before rain forced us to seek shelter inside.

The audience included scholars whom I had not seen in years, among them Steffen Wippel and Katrin Bromber, who had invited me to Berlin more than fifteen years earlier. Others joined online from different parts of the world, including former students and colleagues -- Lubna Shekfa and Sofia Shwayri. The discussion that followed was lively and thought-provoking. One question in particular lingered in my mind long after the event ended. Why, someone asked, do we continue to use the term “modernity”? Does it still adequately explain the transformations taking place in contemporary cities? Or should we instead speak of neoliberalism, globalization, or perhaps what many in the Arab world now describe as “Dubaization”? It was a valid question, and one that continues to occupy me.

Yet what struck me most was that many of the questions were not really about architecture. They were about coexistence, belonging, memory, and the ways cities accommodate difference. In retrospect, these concerns would reappear the following day as I wandered through Berlin’s neighborhoods. The next morning, I took an Uber to Neukölln to meet a graduate student researching Qatari modernity. We met at Jiwar, a community café whose name means “neighborliness” in Arabic. Sitting over coffee, we discussed architecture, cultural institutions, and urban transformation. Soon afterward Khaled joined us, and after concluding my meeting with the student, we set off on foot through the surrounding streets. Indeed, Neukölln was perhaps the Berlin I most wanted to see.

The neighborhood felt immediately familiar. Arabic signs filled storefronts. The smell of grilled meat drifted from restaurants. Shisha cafés spilled onto sidewalks. Conversations moved effortlessly between German, Arabic, Turkish, and English. At times it felt less like Germany than a fragment of Beirut, Damascus, Amman, or Cairo transplanted into northern Europe. We stopped for lunch at Azzam, a modest but busy restaurant. Around us families gathered for lunch, students lingered over coffee, and delivery drivers hurried in and out. We shared kibbeh, sujuk, hummus, and tabbouleh while discussing Berlin’s changing urban landscape. Afterwards we continued our walk, passing next to a famous landmark and Kebab restaurant specializing in a vegetarian Shawerma sandwich -- Mustafa Gemüse Kebab -- with a long line of people stretching along the sidewalk.

What fascinated me was not simply the presence of migrants but the degree to which they appeared woven into the city’s everyday life. Berlin did not feel like a city divided into neatly separated worlds. Instead, different communities overlapped and intersected in ways that seemed surprisingly organic.

From Neukölln we continued toward Kreuzberg. Decades ago the neighborhood was associated primarily with Berlin’s Turkish community. I recall passing through with no visible signs of luxury -- it was a working-class district that was on the verge of transformation. Today it is synonymous with gentrification. New cafés sit beside older immigrant businesses. Trendy boutiques coexist with long-established markets -- including an indoor food market that provided a wide variety of ethnic food. Graffiti-covered walls stand next to carefully renovated buildings. The contradictions were obvious. Yet they remained visible. Nothing seemed hidden. Nothing appeared sanitized.

This observation stayed with me as we continued toward Kurfürstendamm and eventually arrived at the Europa Center and Bahnhof Zoo. These were places deeply embedded in my own memories of Berlin. As a student in the 1980s, I had spent nights wandering these streets. I remembered the atmosphere of Cold War Berlin, the sense of uncertainty, and of course the book Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo, which transformed the area into a symbol of addiction, alienation, and urban decline. Much has changed since then. Bikini Berlin, once an unremarkable office building, has become an elegant shopping complex. The rooftop now functions as a landscaped public terrace overlooking the city. Yet despite these transformations, the neighborhood still felt connected to its earlier incarnations.

Berlin had changed. But it had not erased itself. That distinction is important.

As Khaled and I sat later that afternoon sharing drinks and reminiscing about Egypt, the UAE, and our years as graduate students, I finally began to understand why this visit felt different from my earlier encounters with Berlin. The city was forcing me to think about Cairo.

One of the central themes explored in the Cairo chapter of Arab Modernism(s)is the relationship between modernization and erasure. Cairo has always been a city of contradictions. Informal settlements exist alongside gated communities. Historic neighborhoods coexist with speculative developments. Everyday urban life unfolds in spaces that planners often ignore or seek to eliminate. The city’s vitality emerges precisely from these juxtapositions. Yet many contemporary interventions—from the redevelopment of Maspero to the construction of the New Administrative Capital—seek to resolve these contradictions through demolition, relocation, and spatial control.

Walking through Berlin made me realize that the issue is not contradiction itself. Every great city is contradictory. The real question is how cities respond to those contradictions. Berlin appears remarkably comfortable allowing them to remain visible. Wealthy districts sit alongside more modest neighborhoods. Migrant communities retain a visible presence. Traces of previous eras survive even amid redevelopment. The city changes constantly, yet it rarely feels compelled to erase what came before.

Cairo increasingly seems to move in the opposite direction. Complexity becomes a problem to solve. Informality becomes something to remove. Memory becomes something to manage. Difference becomes something to resolve. Of course, Berlin is hardly a utopia. It faces its own challenges: rising housing costs, displacement, social tensions, and debates over immigration and identity. Yet what impressed me was the city’s willingness to embrace incompleteness. Berlin often feels unfinished, and perhaps that is precisely its strength.

On my final evening, I walked through the forest toward Schlachtensee, a bucolic lake. The rain had largely stopped. The lake was calm. Across the water, lights flickered through the trees. And in the distance I saw my destination -- the Fischerhütte Restaurant (Fisher Hut restaurant) where a delicious seafood dinner was waiting! I realized that I had spent three days in Berlin without visiting most of its famous monuments. Instead, my memories consisted of conversations with scholars, meals shared with friends, encounters with migrants, walks through neighborhoods, and reflections on cities far beyond Germany.

Perhaps that is the true lesson of Berlin.

Cities are not defined by their monuments, skylines, or master plans. They are defined by their capacity to absorb difference, accommodate memory, and allow multiple histories to coexist. Their vitality lies not in perfection but in the ability to remain open, layered, and unresolved.

As I looked across the dark waters of Schlachtensee one last time, I found myself thinking about Cairo once again. Not the Cairo of postcards or official narratives, but the Cairo of contradictions, improvisations, and everyday encounters. The Cairo that continues to survive despite repeated attempts to remake it.

Berlin had not provided answers. But it had helped clarify the question. What if the future of cities depends less on eliminating contradictions than on learning how to live with them?

أتواجد حالياً في مدينة لييج للمشاركة كممتحن خارجي لأطروحة دكتوراه تتناول التوزيع الجغرافي للمساجد في بلجيكا، وهو موضوع يثير بالضرورة أسئلة تتعلق بالظهور في المجال العام، واللغة المعمارية، والهوية. وبينما كنت أتأمل هذه القضايا، وجدت نفسي أعود بالتفكير إلى حسن فتحي، الذي واجه إشكاليات مشابهة قبل عقود عندما سعى إلى إنشاء قرية نموذجية لسكان القرنة بالقرب من الأقصر في صعيد مصر. وكما أوضحت في كتابي «الحداثة العربية: المدن والتاريخ والثقافة»، فقد انطلقت أعماله من رغبة صادقة في صياغة عمارة متجذرة في الثقافة المحلية والتقاليد، لكنها كشفت أيضاً عن التعقيدات والتناقضات التي تنشأ عندما تُصاغ الهوية من الأعلى، بدلاً من أن تنبثق من التجارب المعيشية للناس أنفسهم

تظل بعض اللقاءات المعمارية عالقة في الذاكرة مدى الحياة. أما لقائي أنا فلم يبدأ بمبنى، بل بكتاب. في عام ١٩٨٥، وكنت آنذاك طالباً شاباً في كلية الهندسة بجامعة القاهرة، وجدت نفسي متطوعاً في المؤتمر السنوي للاتحاد الدولي للمعماريين الذي استضافته الجامعة. كان حدثاً استثنائياً بكل المقاييس. تدفق المعماريون من مختلف أنحاء العالم إلى القاهرة، وكنا نحن الطلاب نتطلع إليهم بإعجاب، مفتونين بالأفكار الكبرى والضيوف الأجانب، وإن كنا نشعر في الوقت ذاته بشيء من الإحباط من تعليم معماري بدا وكأنه يكتفي بتعليمنا كيف نرسم، لا كيف نفكر

ثمة لحظة من ذلك المؤتمر لا تزال محفورة في ذاكرتي. كان حسن فتحي، الذي أصبح آنذاك شخصية أسطورية في الأوساط المعمارية العالمية، لكنه ظل مهمشاً بصورة غريبة داخل المؤسسة المعمارية المصرية، يتسلم الميدالية الذهبية للاتحاد الدولي للمعماريين. ما زلت أذكر نفسي جالساً وسط الحشود في قاعة الاحتفالات بجامعة القاهرة، أراقب رئيس الاتحاد وهو ينحني أمامه ليقدم له الجائزة. بدت اللحظة رمزية إلى حد بعيد. ها هو معماري اعتبره كثيرون من أبناء المهنة مجرد ظاهرة محلية هامشية، يتلقى واحداً من أرفع الأوسمة المعمارية في العالم

لكنني، في الحقيقة، كنت أعرف حسن فتحي قبل ذلك بسنوات

جاء التعارف الأول عبر والدي. ذات يوم أهداني نسخة من كتاب «عمارة الفقراء». وإلى جانبها مجلة معمارية سويسرية تعود إلى ستينيات القرن الماضي، تضمنت ملفاً خاصاً عن أعمال فتحي. كانت الصور آسرة. قباب، وأقبية، وأفنية داخلية، وأروقة مظللة، وقرى تبدو وكأنها نبتت من الأرض نفسها. كل ذلك بدا مختلفاً تماماً عن العمارة التي كنا ندرسها في الجامعة. في جامعة القاهرة تعلمنا أن نعجب بلو كوربوزييه، وميس فان دير روه، وفالتر غروبيوس، وبالتراث الكامل للحداثة الغربية. أما حسن فتحي فلم يكن له مكان في المنهج الدراسي. ولم يرد اسمه حتى كحاشية صغيرة تحت عنوان «العمارة التقليدية». كانت عمارته وفلسفته ورؤيته للعالم تُعد، في نظر أساتذتنا، غير جديرة بأي اهتمام أكاديمي جاد

لكن تلك الصور استحوذت عليّ. كانت توحي بإمكانية أخرى. هنا كان معماري يجادل بأن الحداثة لا ينبغي أن تأتي دائماً مستوردة من الخارج، بل يمكن أن تنبع من المواد المحلية، والمناخ، والتقاليد، وأنماط الحياة اليومية. بالنسبة لطالب شاب يبحث عن بدائل، بدا حسن فتحي ثورياً بكل معنى الكلمة. أردت أن أرى القرنة بنفسي. وجاءت الفرصة خلال رحلة جامعية إلى صعيد مصر. وكحال أجيال من طلاب العمارة قبلنا، سافرنا جنوباً لدراسة آثار مصر القديمة. لكن اهتمامي كان في مكان آخر. فبعد زيارة وادي الملوك، أقنعت مشرف الرحلة بالتوقف في القرنة الجديدة.

ما وجدته هناك لم يكن القرية التي رأيتها في الصور. أتذكر أنني كنت أحدق من نافذة الحافلة باحثاً عن القباب التي سحرتني لسنوات. ظهرت أخيراً، لكن بصعوبة. كانت المباني تتداعى. أضيفت ملحقات عشوائية إلى الواجهات. تراكمت النفايات في الساحات العامة. وبدا السوق مهجوراً. أما القرية النقية التي عرفتها من الصور اللامعة فقد تحولت إلى شيء مختلف تماماً

لم ينزل من الحافلة سوى عدد قليل منا. أما بقية المجموعة فبقيت في أماكنها، منشغلة باهتماماتها الخاصة، تنظر إلى تلك المباني المتداعية باعتبارها إهانة لفكرة العمارة الجادة. وما إن وطأت أقدامنا الأرض حتى أحاطت بنا مجموعة من الأطفال وعرضوا علينا أن يدلونا على بيت حسن فتحي»

سرنا خلفهم عبر الأزقة الضيقة نستكشف ما تبقى من القرية. وبرغم مظاهر الخراب، ظل هناك شيء سحري في المكان. احتفظ المسجد بألفته ووقاره. واستمرت الأروقة في تشكيل أنماط رائعة من الضوء والظل. أما النسب المعمارية فبقيت بديعة كما هي. ومع ذلك، كان هناك أيضاً شعور عميق بالحزن

وقفت فوق سطح أحد المنازل برفقة زميليّ علي ومجدي، نتأمل الجدران المتشققة والأفنية المتداعية، ووجدت نفسي أطرح سؤالاً ظل يرافقني لعقود: إذا كان هذا المشروع يحظى بكل هذا الاحتفاء، فلماذا فشل؟

اكتشفت لاحقاً أن الإجابة أكثر تعقيداً بكثير مما تسمح به كتب تاريخ العمارة

تصور حسن فتحي القرنة بوصفها حداثة بديلة. أراد أن يخلق عمارة متجذرة في الثقافة المحلية بدلاً من استيراد النماذج الدولية الجاهزة. وقبل أن يتحدث مؤرخو العمارة بسنوات طويلة عن «الإقليمية النقدية»، كان فتحي يواجه السؤال الذي طرحه الفيلسوف بول ريكور: كيف نصبح حديثين من دون أن نفقد صلتنا بجذورنا؟ وفي جوانب كثيرة، سبق عصره بالفعل

لكن القرنة كشفت أيضاً حدود هذه الرؤية

فلم يكن السكان مجرد متلقين سلبيين ينتظرون التنوير. كانت لديهم أولوياتهم واقتصادهم وتطلعاتهم الخاصة. رفض كثيرون الانتقال. ورأى بعضهم أن القباب تشبه المقابر أكثر مما تشبه البيوت. واعترض آخرون على الابتعاد عن مصادر رزقهم. والأهم من ذلك كله أن القرية لم تسمح بالنمو التدريجي والتكيف المستمر اللذين يميزان المستوطنات التقليدية. كانت المنازل مصممة بعناية، لكنها كانت أشياء مكتملة ونهائية. أما القرى الحقيقية فلا تكتمل أبداً

ويظهر هذا التوتر بوضوح في التمثيلات الثقافية المصرية للقرنة. ففي رواية «الجبل» وفيلمها المقتبس عنها، يتحول المعماري إلى شخصية مأساوية ومتعالية في آن واحد، مقتنعة تماماً بصواب رؤيته لكنه عاجز عن إقناع من يسعى إلى مساعدتهم. وفي أحد المشاهد الشهيرة يهاجم الأهالي المستوطنة الجديدة بالمشاعل المشتعلة. قد يكون ذلك خيالاً، لكنه يستند إلى حقيقة أعمق. أما الواقع فلم يكن أقل درامية. ففي مرحلة من المراحل، يُقال إن الأهالي فتحوا بوابات المياه، مما أدى إلى إغراق أجزاء من القرية بمياه النيل

هنا اصطدمت العمارة بالحياة اليومية

ولهذا السبب تحديداً أصف القرنة بأنها «فشل مثير للاهتمام

فالفشل لا يقلل من أهميتها، بل على العكس تماماً. ولعل أهميتها تنبع أساساً من فشلها. لقد أدرك حسن فتحي مبكراً كثيراً من أوجه القصور في الحداثة السائدة. فهم أهمية المناخ، والهوية، والمعرفة المحلية، والاستمرارية الثقافية قبل أن تصبح هذه الموضوعات رائجة في الخطاب المعماري. لكنه وقع أيضاً في فخ شائع بين الحداثيين: الاعتقاد بأن المعماري يعرف دائماً ما هو الأفضل للناس. كان هناك قدر من الأبوية الكامنة في المشروع

والمفارقة المأساوية أن العمارة التي صُممت للفقراء تحولت تدريجياً إلى عمارة للأثرياء. فمع مرور الوقت استُخدمت لغة فتحي المعمارية، المتمثلة في القباب والأقبية والأفنية، في المنتجعات الفاخرة والمجمعات السكنية الحصرية والمشاريع النخبوية. وما بدأ مشروعاً اجتماعياً انتهى إلى أسلوب جمالي تحولت «عمارة الفقراء» إلى «عمارة الأغنياء». وربما تكون هذه هي أكثر الدروس دلالة

فالحداثة في العالم العربي لم تكن يوماً مجرد اختيار بين التقليد والتقدم. لقد كانت صراعاً أكثر تعقيداً، يتعلق بالسلطة والهوية والتمثيل، وبالسؤال الجوهري حول من يملك حق تقرير شكل المستقبل الأفضل

وتذكرنا القرنة بأن العمارة لا يمكن فرضها من الأعلى، مهما حسنت النوايا. فالهوية لا تُصمم على طاولة الرسم، بل تنبثق من الناس أنفسهم: من ممارساتهم، وطموحاتهم، وتكيفاتهم، وحياتهم اليومية

ولهذا لا يزال حسن فتحي يثير اهتمامي حتى اليوم. لقد رفض قبول الأمر الواقع، وسعى، ربما عبثاً، إلى البحث عن طريق آخر: طريقة مختلفة للبناء، وطريقة مختلفة للرؤية

وبعد ما يقرب من ثمانين عاماً، ما زلنا نخوض النقاش نفسه، ونواجه التحديات ذاتها، ونطرح الأسئلة نفسها

وكأننا لم نتعلم شيئاً على الإطلاق

I am currently in Liège to serve as an external examiner for a dissertation on the regional distribution of mosques in Belgium—a topic that inevitably raises questions of visibility, architectural language, and identity. As I reflected on these issues, my thoughts turned to Hassan Fathy, who grappled with similar concerns decades ago in his attempt to create a model village for the residents of Gourna near Luxor in Upper Egypt. As I recount in my book “Arab Modernism(s)” his work was driven by a desire to forge an architecture rooted in local culture and tradition, yet it also revealed the complexities and contradictions that arise when identity is shaped from above rather than emerging from the lived experiences of the people themselves.

Some architectural encounters stay with you for a lifetime. Mine began not in a building, but in a book.

In 1985, as a young architecture student at Cairo University, I found myself volunteering at the annual conference of the Union Internationale des Architectes (UIA), held on our campus. It was a remarkable event. Architects from around the world descended upon Cairo. We were eager students, fascinated by foreign visitors and grand ideas, though often frustrated by an architectural education that seemed content to teach us how to draw rather than how to think.

One moment from that conference remains etched in my memory. Hassan Fathy, already a legendary figure abroad but curiously neglected within Egypt’s own architectural establishment, was awarded the UIA Gold Medal. I still remember, seated among the crowds in the auditorium of Cairo University, watching as the organization’s president knelt before him to present the award. It felt symbolic. Here was an architect whom much of the local profession had dismissed as a provincial sideshow, receiving one of the highest international honors.

Yet by then, I already knew who Hassan Fathy was.

My introduction had come several years earlier through my father. One day he handed me a copy of Architecture for the Poor. Alongside it was a Swiss architectural magazine from the 1960s containing a feature on Fathy’s work. The images were mesmerizing. Domes, vaults, courtyards, shaded arcades, villages emerging organically from the earth. They seemed completely different from the architecture we were studying at university. At Cairo University we were taught to admire Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe, Walter Gropius, and the canon of Western modernism. Fathy did not appear in the curriculum. Even as a footnote under “vernacular architecture.” His architecture, philosophy and world view were deemed not worthy of any serious pursuit.

But those photographs captivated me. They suggested another possibility. Here was an architect arguing that modernity did not have to arrive imported from elsewhere. It could emerge from local materials, climate, traditions, and ways of life. To a young student searching for alternatives, Fathy appeared revolutionary. I wanted to see Gourna for myself. The opportunity arrived during a university field trip to Upper Egypt. Like generations of architecture students before us, we traveled south to study Egypt’s ancient monuments. Yet my interest was elsewhere. After visiting the Valley of the Kings, I persuaded our supervisor to stop at New Gourna. What I encountered was not the village from the photographs. I remember peering through the bus window, searching for the iconic domes that had fascinated me. Eventually they appeared, but barely. The buildings were crumbling. Additions had been attached to facades. Garbage accumulated in public spaces. The marketplace seemed abandoned. The pristine village from the glossy images had become something altogether different.

Only a handful of us got off the bus. The rest of the group remained behind, too busy with their own petty interests, seeing a ramshackle of crumbling buildings as an affront to serious architecture. As soon as we set step outside the bus a group of children quickly surrounded us and offered to show us “Hassan Fathy’s house.” Following them through narrow pathways, we explored the remains of the village. Despite the decay, there was still something magical about the place. The mosque retained its intimacy and dignity. The arcades still framed beautiful patterns of light and shadow. The proportions remained exquisite.

Yet there was also sadness.

Standing on the roof of one of the houses, alongside my colleagues Ali and Magdy, looking down at cracked walls and deteriorating courtyards, I found myself asking a question that would stay with me for decades: if this project was so celebrated, why had it failed? The answer, I later discovered, is quite complicated. Fathy envisioned Gourna as an alternative modernity. He wanted to create architecture rooted in local culture rather than imported international styles. Long before architectural historians began speaking of critical regionalism, Fathy was already grappling with the question that philosopher Paul Ricoeur famously posed: how does one become modern while remaining connected to one’s sources? In many respects, he anticipated debates that would dominate architecture for decades. Yet Gourna also revealed the limitations of this vision.

The villagers were not passive recipients waiting for a savior. They had their own priorities, economies, and aspirations. Many resisted relocation. Some saw the domes as resembling tombs rather than homes. Others objected to being removed from their livelihoods. Most significantly, the village did not allow for the incremental growth and adaptation that characterized traditional settlements. The houses were carefully designed, but they were finished objects. Real villages are never finished. This tension appears vividly in Egyptian cultural representations of Gourna. In the novel The Mountain and its film adaptation, the architect becomes a tragic and somewhat arrogant figure, convinced of his own vision yet unable to persuade those he seeks to help. In one memorable scene, villagers attack the new settlement with burning torches. Fiction, perhaps, but rooted in a deeper truth. Reality proved no less dramatic. At one point, villagers reportedly opened floodgates, allowing Nile waters to inundate parts of the settlement.

Architecture had collided with everyday life.

This, ultimately, is why I describe Gourna as an “interesting failure.” Failure does not diminish its significance. On the contrary, it is precisely because Gourna failed that it remains so important. Fathy foresaw many of the shortcomings of orthodox modernism. He understood the importance of climate, identity, local knowledge, and cultural continuity long before these concerns became fashionable. Yet he also fell into a trap common to many modernists: believing that architects know what is best for people.

There was a paternalism embedded within the project. Moreover, an architecture conceived for the poor gradually became an architecture for the wealthy. Over time, Fathy’s language of domes, vaults, and courtyards was appropriated by luxury resorts, exclusive compounds, and elite developments. What began as a social project evolved into an aesthetic style. Architecture for the poor became architecture for the rich. And perhaps that is the most revealing lesson of all.

Modernity in the Arab world was never simply a matter of choosing between tradition and progress. It was a far more complex struggle involving power, identity, representation, and the question of who gets to decide what a better future looks like.

Gourna reminds us that architecture cannot be imposed from above, no matter how noble the intentions. Identity cannot be designed into existence. It must emerge from the people themselves—from their practices, aspirations, adaptations, and everyday lives.

That is why Hassan Fathy continues to fascinate me. He refused to accept the status quo and instead sought in vain to search for an alternative way -- a different way of building, a different way of seeing.

And nearly eighty years later, we are still engaged in the same debate, the same challenges, the same issues.

As if we learned nothing at all.

هناك كتب تبقى معنا طويلاً بعد أن ننتهي من قراءتها. ليس بسبب حبكتها، ولا حتى بسبب أفكارها، بل لأنها تغيّر الطريقة التي نرى بها العالم. كانت رواية الغريب لألبير كامو واحدة من تلك الكتب بالنسبة لي. ومثل كثير من القرّاء، قرأتها في البداية بوصفها استكشافاً للوجودية والعبث. فقد بدا ميرسو، بطل الرواية المنعزل واللامبالي، تجسيداً لرؤية كامو لعالمٍ منزوع المعنى، يواجه فيه الإنسان لا مبالاة الوجود وقسوته. لكن مع عودتي إلى الرواية عبر السنين، بدأت أكتشف فيها بُعداً آخر. فخلف التأملات الفلسفية كان هناك شيء لا يقل إثارة: صورة للجزائر في زمن الاستعمار، وبشكل أكثر تحديداً صورة لمدينة الجزائر نفسها.

مؤخراً شاهدتُ النسخة السينمائية الجديدة من الغريب، صُوِّر الفيلم بالأبيض والأسود بإتقانٍ بصري لافت، وأعاد إحياء عالم كامو بصورة نابضة بالحياة. انكشفت أمام المشاهد أزقة الجزائر الاستعمارية الضيقة، وعماراتها السكنية، ومقاهيها، حمامات السباحة العامة، ودور السينما، وواجهتها البحرية بوضوحٍ أخّاذ. وبينما كان ميرسو يتنقّل في المدينة، وجدت نفسي أقل اهتماماً بالسرد وأكثر انجذاباً إلى الفضاءات التي يشغلها.

يفتتح الفيلم مشاهده بصورٍ للقصبة المكتظة بالحياة قبل أن ينتقل إلى الحكاية المألوفة: اعتقال ميرسو ومحاكمته. ومن خلال سلسلة من الاسترجاعات الزمنية نرافقه إلى جنازة والدته ثم نعود معه إلى المدينة حيث يستأنف روتين حياته المعتاد. نرى شوارع تعجّ بالحركة، وجادات أوروبية أنيقة، وساحات عامة مزدحمة، ودور سينما لا يُسمح بدخولها إلا للفرنسيين دون السكان الأصليين، كما تعلن لافتة معلّقة في اابهو، إضافة إلى المتاجر والمقاهي. ومع ذلك، فإن أكثر ما أثار انتباهي لم يكن ما أظهره الفيلم، بل ما أخفاه.

إن الجزائر التي تقدّمها رواية الغريب مدينة منقسمة.

فالمستوطنون الأوروبيون يشغلون الشوارع الواسعة، والفضاءات العامة المصانة بعناية، والأحياء المنظمة التي تبدو منفصلة تقريباً عمّا يحيط بها. أما الجزائريون الأصليون فلا يظهرون إلا على الهامش. تتحول المدينة إلى مسرح تُنقش عليه السلطة الاستعمارية في تفاصيل الحياة اليومية. فالفصل بين السكان ليس مجرد واقع سياسي، بل هو جزء لا يتجزأ من المشهد العمراني نفسه. وكانت هذه الملاحظة إحدى نقاط الانطلاق الأساسية للفصل الذي خصصته لمدينة الجزائر في كتابي الحداثة (أو الحداثات) العربية. يناقش الفصل كيف غيّر الاستعمار المدن الجزائرية، وكيف تحولت العمارة إلى أداة للهيمنة والضبط والمراقبة. لكنه يطرح أيضاً سؤالاً أكثر تعقيداً: ماذا يحدث عندما يستولي الناس على الأشكال العمرانية التي فُرضت عليهم أصلاً لتسهيل السيطرة عليهم ويعيدون توظيفها وفق احتياجاتهم ورؤاهم؟

هذا السؤال يقع في صميم تجربة الحداثة في العالم العربي.

كثيراً ما تنحصر النقاشات حول العمارة الحديثة في المنطقة بين طرفين متناقضين: الاحتفاء والإدانة. فالتدخلات الاستعمارية تُقدَّم إما بوصفها أدوات للتقدم والتحديث، أو تُرفض باعتبارها فرضاً أجنبياً على المجتمعات المحلية. لكن الواقع أكثر تعقيداً بكثير. فالمباني والشوارع والمخططات العمرانية نادراً ما تظل وفية للنوايا الأصلية لمصمميها. وما إن تُسكن وتُستخدم حتى تكتسب معاني جديدة. يعيد الناس تكييفها وتشكيلها ومقاومتها، وفي نهاية المطاف يجعلونها جزءاً من عالمهم الخاص. وربما تُعد الجزائر واحدة من أكثر الأمثلة إثارة للاهتمام على هذه العملية. فالمدينة احتضنت بعضاً من أكثر التجارب المعمارية والتخطيطية طموحاً في القرن العشرين. سعت السلطات الاستعمارية الفرنسية إلى إعادة تشكيل المجتمع الجزائري من خلال الفضاء العمراني، وطرح المعماريون رؤى كبرى للمدينة، من بينها مشاريع لو كوربوزييه الشهيرة، وعلى رأسها «مخطط أوبوس، كما هدفت مشاريع الإسكان وشبكات البنية التحتية والتطويرات الحداثية إلى فرض نظام اجتماعي معين على المشهد الحضري الاستعماري.

ومع ذلك، فإن هذه المشاريع لم تتحقق أبداً بالشكل الذي تصوره أصحابها، أو أنها لم تُنفذ أصلاً.

لقد أعاد السكان توظيف هذه الفضاءات بطرق لم تكن متوقعة. فتحولت المباني المصممة للضبط والسيطرة إلى أماكن للحياة اليومية، وتحوّلت الأحياء التي أُنشئت كأدوات للهيمنة إلى فضاءات للتضامن والمقاومة، كما حدث في مشروع «كليما دو فرانس» الذي أصبح مع مرور الزمن جزءاً من حي باب العود. استوعبت المدينة هذه التدخلات وفي الوقت نفسه أعادت تشكيلها وفق منطقها الخاص. وهذا التوتر بين الفرض والاستحواذ هو ما يجعل الجزائر مدينة آسرة إلى هذا الحد.

كما يفسر ذلك المكانة المحورية التي تحتلها الأدب والسينما في الفصل الذي خصصته للمدينة. فالمدن لا تُعاش من خلال العمارة وحدها، بل تُفهم أيضاً عبر القصص والذكريات والصور والمشاعر. تكشف رواية الغريب لألبير كامو عن نسخة معينة من الجزائر: مدينة استعمارية تُرى من خلال عيون مستوطن أوروبي. لكن منظوراً مختلفاً يظهر في رواية تحقيق ميرسو للكاتب كمال داود. يعيد داود سرد حكاية كامو من وجهة نظر شقيق العربي المجهول الذي قتله ميرسو. ومن خلال ذلك يمنح صوتاً لمن جرى محوه من السرد الأصلي. تظهر المدينة بصورة مختلفة؛ فالشوارع والأحياء والذكريات التي بدت هامشية في عالم كامو تصبح هنا مركزية. ما كان خفياً يصبح مرئياً.

إن قراءة الروايتين معاً تكشف حقيقة عميقة: المدن ليست كياناً واحداً أو قصة واحدة. فهي تحتوي على تواريخ متعددة، وسرديات متعددة، وأشكال متعددة من الانتماء. فما يبدو منظماً ومنطقياً من منظور معين قد يبدو إقصائياً من منظور آخر. وما يُقدَّم بوصفه حداثة وتقدماً قد يحمل في الوقت نفسه آثار العنف والاقتلاع والتهميش. وربما لهذا السبب أجد نفسي أعود مراراً إلى الحديث النبوي الشريف: بدأ الإسلام غريباً وسيعود غريباً كما بدأ، فطوبى للغرباء. يتجاوز هذا القول سياقه الديني ليحمل معنى إنسانياً أوسع. فنحن جميعاً غرباء بطريقة أو بأخرى. نعبر المدن بحثاً عن الانتماء، بينما نواجه الاختلاف والذاكرة والفقدان. نسكن فضاءات شكلتها تواريخ لم نصنعها بأنفسنا، ونرث مشاهد عمرانية تتراكب فيها سرديات متعارضة ومتصارعة.

الجزائر مدينة الغرباء.

إنها مدينة تتجاور فيها الجادات الاستعمارية مع الأحياء الشعبية الأصيلة؛ وتتقاطع فيها ذكريات الاحتلال مع ذكريات التحرر؛ وتصل فيها الحداثة عبر الهيمنة، قبل أن يعاد تشكيلها من خلال ممارسات الحياة اليومية. إنها مدينة ترفض التفسيرات البسيطة والقراءات الأحادية.يستكشف فصل الجزائر في كتاب الحداثة (أو الحداثات) العربية هذه التناقضات من خلال العمارة والأدب والسينما والتاريخ الحضري. ويتتبع تحوّل المدينة من عاصمة استعمارية إلى حاضرة ما بعد الاستعمار، بينما يطرح أسئلة أوسع حول معنى الحداثة في العالم العربي. والأهم من ذلك أنه يسلط الضوء على الكيفية التي يسكن بها الناس العاديون الفضاءات، ويعيدون تأويلها، ويستعيدون في النهاية أماكن لم تُصمَّم أصلاً من أجلهم

بالنسبة لي، ليست الجزائر مجرد دراسة حالة. إنها تذكير بأن المدن أرشيفات حيّة للصراع والذاكرة والإمكانات الكامنة. ولكي نفهمها حقاً، علينا أن ننظر إلى ما هو أبعد من المباني والمخططات. علينا أن نصغي إلى القصص، وأن نتتبع الأصوات المنسية، وأن نلتفت إلى أولئك الذين ظلوا طويلاً على الهامش.

عندها فقط يمكننا أن نرى المدينة بكل تعقيداتها.

Some books stay with us long after we have finished reading them. Not because of their plot, nor even because of their ideas, but because they alter the way we see the world. Albert Camus’ The Stranger was one such book for me. Like many readers, I first encountered it as an exploration of existentialism and the absurd. Meursault, the detached protagonist, seemed to embody Camus’ vision of a universe stripped of meaning, where human beings confront the indifference of existence. Yet as I returned to the novel over the years, another dimension began to emerge. Beneath the philosophical themes lay something equally compelling: a portrait of colonial Algeria and, more specifically, a portrait of Algiers itself.

Recently, I watched a film adaptation of The Stranger (2025/26). Beautifully shot in black and white, it brought Camus’ world vividly to life. The narrow streets, apartment blocks, cafés, public baths, cinemas, and waterfronts of colonial Algiers unfolded on screen with remarkable clarity. As Meursault moved through the city, I found myself paying less attention to the narrative and more to the spaces he inhabited.

The film opens with images of a crowded Casbah before moving into the familiar story of Meursault’s arrest and trial. Through flashbacks we accompany him to his mother’s funeral and back to the city where he resumes his routine existence. We encounter bustling streets, elegant European boulevards, crowded public squares, cinemas only accessible to the French not the natives (Indigène) as a sign proclaims in the lobby, shops, and cafés. Yet what struck me most was not what was shown, but what remained hidden.

The Algiers of The Stranger is a divided city.

European settlers occupy wide streets, well-maintained public spaces, and orderly neighborhoods that seem almost detached from their surroundings. Indigenous Algerians appear only at the margins. The city becomes a stage upon which colonial power is inscribed into everyday life. Segregation is not simply a political condition; it is embedded in the urban landscape itself. This realization became one of the starting points for my chapter on Algiers in Arab Modernism(s). The chapter explores how colonialism transformed Algerian cities and how architecture became a tool of domination, control, and surveillance. Yet it also asks a more complicated question: what happens when imposed forms are appropriated by the people they were intended to govern?

This question lies at the heart of modernism in the Arab world.

Too often, discussions of modern architecture in the region become trapped between celebration and condemnation. Colonial interventions are either praised as instruments of progress or dismissed as foreign impositions. The reality is far more nuanced. Buildings, streets, and urban plans rarely remain faithful to the intentions of their creators. Once inhabited, they acquire new meanings. People adapt them, reshape them, resist them, and ultimately make them their own. Algiers offers perhaps one of the most fascinating examples of this process. The city contains some of the twentieth century’s most ambitious experiments in architecture and urban planning. French colonial authorities attempted to reshape Algerian society through urban form. Architects proposed grand visions for the city, including schemes by figures such as Le Corbusier and his Plan Obus. Housing projects, infrastructure networks, and modernist developments sought to impose a particular social order upon the colonial landscape.

Yet these projects never unfolded exactly as intended, or were never built to begin with.

Residents appropriated spaces in unexpected ways. Buildings designed to discipline became places of everyday life. Neighborhoods created as instruments of control evolved into sites of community and resistance as has happened in Climat de France which over the years changed into Bab Al Oued. The city absorbed these interventions while simultaneously transforming them. This tension between imposition and appropriation is what makes Algiers so compelling. It also explains why literature and film occupy such an important place in my chapter. Cities are not experienced solely through architecture. They are understood through stories, memories, images, and emotions. Camus’ The Stranger reveals one version of Algiers—a colonial city seen through the eyes of a European settler. But another perspective emerges in Kamel Daoud’s remarkable novel The Meursault Investigation. Daoud retells Camus’ story from the perspective of the brother of the unnamed Arab murdered by Meursault. In doing so, he restores a voice that had been erased. The city appears differently. The streets, neighborhoods, and memories that seemed peripheral in Camus become central. The invisible becomes visible.

Reading the two novels together reveals something profound. Cities are never singular. They contain multiple histories, multiple narratives, and multiple forms of belonging. What appears orderly from one perspective may appear exclusionary from another. What seems modern and progressive may simultaneously embody violence and dispossession. Perhaps this is why I find myself returning repeatedly to a saying attributed to the Prophet Muhammad: “Islam began as something strange and will return to being strange just as it began; so glad tidings to the strangers.” The saying resonates far beyond its religious context. We are all strangers in one way or another. We move through cities searching for belonging while confronting difference, memory, and loss. We inhabit spaces shaped by histories we did not create. We inherit urban landscapes layered with conflicting narratives.

Algiers is a city of strangers. It is a city where colonial boulevards coexist with indigenous quarters; where memories of occupation intersect with memories of liberation; where modernity arrived through domination yet was reshaped through everyday life. It is a city that refuses simple interpretations.

The chapter on Algiers in Arab Modernism(s) explores these contradictions through architecture, literature, cinema, and urban history. It traces the city’s transformation from colonial capital to postcolonial metropolis while asking broader questions about modernity in the Arab world. More importantly, it examines how ordinary people inhabit, reinterpret, and ultimately reclaim spaces that were never intended for them.

For me, Algiers is not simply a case study. It is a reminder that cities are living archives of conflict, memory, and possibility. To understand them, we must look beyond buildings and plans. We must listen to stories, follow forgotten voices, and pay attention to those who remain hidden in the margins.

Only then can we begin to see the city in all its complexity.

ما كان يدهشني دائماً في هذه الأغنية ليس فقط حنينها الرومانسي، بل الطريقة التي عبرت بها عن المدينة. فالمدن لا تكتسب معناها الحقيقي عبر الأبراج أو المعالم العمرانية، بل من خلال اللقاءات العابرة التي تتجاوز أهميتها الزمن القصير الذي تستغرقه. نظرة عبر زجاج مقهى. حديث يمتد حتى آخر الليل. ألفة وجه يجلس قبالتك على طاولة صغيرة. لحظة معلقة خارج الزمن. مثل هذه اللحظات تبقى عالقة في داخلنا حتى بعد أن تتغير المدن وتتلاشى الأماكن

تذكرت هذه الأغنية في احدي امسيات يتاير الماضي بينما كنت أجلس مع صديقين قديمين في مقهى «سيلانترو» بشارع ٩ في المعادي.

لطالما احتل شارع ٩ مكانة خاصة في خريطتي الذهنية للقاهرة. إنه الشريان التجاري الرئيسي للمعادي، لكنه في المساء يتحول إلى فضاء للمتعة والبطء والتسكع. المقاهي تتمدد فوق الأرصفة، والعشاق يمشون بلا هدف تحت الأضواء، والطلاب يتنقلون بحواسيبهم المحمولة من مقهى إلى آخر، والباعة يقفون عند الزوايا، والسيارات تدور ببطء حول الميدان أعلى الشارع بينما تتطاير شذرات الأحاديث في الهواء الليلي

أما «سيلانترو» نفسه فلم يكن مكاناً استثنائياً. مجرد مقهى حديث من سلسلة مقاهٍ منتشرة في القاهرة. لا خدمة طاولات فيه؛ عليك أن تقف عند الكاشير لتطلب القهوة وقطعة الحلوى. في الداخل جلس الطلاب بصمت أمام شاشات حواسيبهم المضيئة. أما نحن فاخترنا الجلوس في الخارج مطلين على الميدان حيث امتزجت أضواء السيارات العابرة بالإضاءة الصفراء الناعمة المنبعثة من المقاهي والمحال المحيطة

وصلت أولاً. ثم ظهر ناصر. وبعده بقليل انضم إلينا حسين

كنا قد التقينا للمرة الأولى ونحن أطفال في المدرسة الألمانية بالقاهرة. من ١٩٧٣ حتى ١٩٨١ تقاسمنا الفصول الدراسية نفسها، والنكات نفسها، والمخاوف نفسها، وتلك التفاصيل الصغيرة التي تصنع المراهقة. مرت السنوات. تفرقت بنا الحياة. تدخلت البلدان والمسافات. تشكلت الوظائف والعائلات. واختفى الآباء و الامهات. ومع ذلك وجدنا أنفسنا هناك مرة أخرى، جالسين معاً كما لو أن الزمن أعادنا فجأة إلى طفولتنا

في لحظة ما طلب حسين من أحد العاملين في المقهى أن يلتقط لنا صورة. التُقطت الصورة من داخل المقهى عبر الواجهة الزجاجية بينما كنا نجلس خارجاً غارقين في الحديث. عدت إلى هذه الصورة مراراً منذ رجوعي إلى الولايات المتحدة. هناك شيء سينمائي فيها على نحو غريب. انعكاسات الزجاج. الأضواء الخافتة. الضبابية البسيطة في الخلفية. نحن الثلاثة منحنون نحو بعضنا في تركيز عميق نتحدث عن موضوع تلو الآخر

تمتلك الصورة ما كان رولان بارت يسميه «البنكتوم»؛ ذلك التفصيل الذي يجرحك فجأة ويأسرك ولا يتركك. وأنا أنظر إليها أدركت أننا، ولو للحظة قصيرة، عدنا أطفالاً من جديد. بالطبع كنا قد تقدمنا في العمر. وجوهنا حملت آثار السنوات والتاريخ. لكننا في تلك اللحظة لم نعد رجالاً يواجهون قلق الحاضر، بل زملاء دراسة يتبادلون الحكايات بعد انتهاء اليوم المدرسي

وربما هذا ما تكونه المقاهي حقاً

في كتاباتي كلها - و خاصة في كتابي القادم “قاهرتي: خرائط الانتماء” اعود باستمرار الي فكرة “المكان الثالث” و هو المفهوم الذي طوره عالم الاجتماع راي اولدنبرغ لوصف الأماكن الواقعة بين البيت والعمل: المقاهي، والشوارع، والأندية، والمكتبات، ومحال الشاي، والحدائق. أماكن يتشكل فيها الانتماء بصورة غير رسمية عبر اللقاءات المتكررة والطقوس اليومية المشتركة

في القاهرة تحمل هذه الأمكنة أهمية استثنائية. تتحول إلى امتداد للحياة المنزلية. ملاجئ مؤقتة من الوحدة. مسارح للذاكرة والحديث. لحظات من الصحبة وسط الحجم الهائل والاضطراب الذي يميز المدينة

ولم تكن هذه أولى ذكرياتي مع ذلك المقهى تحديداً. فقد التقيت ناصر هناك قبل سنوات بعد وفاة والدي في ٢٠٠٦. وخلال زياراتي للقاهرة كنت كثيراً ما أعمل فيه أثناء إجراء أبحاثي، أستريح بين المقابلات والمشاهدات وجولاتي الطويلة في المدينة. وكحال كثير من مقاهي القاهرة، تراكمت فوقه طبقات من التاريخ الشخصي

أما هنا في الولايات المتحدة فأنا أقضي ساعات طويلة في المقاهي أيضاً. ألتقي طلاب دكتوراه وزملاء وأساتذة. أحياناً أقدم النصيحة لطلاب يصارعون أطروحاتهم أو حياتهم. وأحياناً أجلس وحدي لساعات أعمل بصمت. لكن رغم الراحة التي توفرها هذه الأماكن، فإنها نادراً ما تمنحني الإحساس نفسه. يبقى هناك دائماً شعور خفي بالاغتراب، كأنني — كما تقول العبارة — غريب في أرض غريبة

ربما لأن البيت ليس مجرد مكان مادي ملموس

هذا الإدراك أعاد إلى ذهني أعمالاً أخرى تمحورت حول الأحاديث واللقاءات العابرة. فيلم «عشائي مع أندريه» يصور بأكمله تقريباً رجلين يتحاوران أثناء العشاء في مطعم بنيويورك، لكن من خلال الحديث يتكشف عالم كامل. وفي فيلم «منتصف الليل في باريس» لوودي آلن تتحول المقاهي إلى بوابات زمنية يلتقي فيها البطل بالكتاب والفنانين والأزمنة الضائعة، فتغدو المدينة مكاناً للسحر والدهشة. وربما استلهم ذلك من الرواية اليابانية «قبل أن تبرد القهوة» التي تدور حول احتمال أن يستطيع مقهى ما تعليق الزمن للحظات

أما النقيض الكامل لذلك فيظهر في لوحة «صقور الليل» لإدوارد هوبر. فالمقهى هناك مضاء أيضاً ليلاً، لكن الأشخاص داخله يبدون معزولين رغم قربهم من بعضهم البعض. تتحول الحداثة الحضرية إلى عزلة بدلاً من التواصل

كانت طاولتنا في «سيلانترو» نقيض عالم هوبر تماماً

ما التقطته الصورة لم يكن مجرد صداقة، بل استمرارية في زمن التشظي. لحظة عابرة من التواصل الإنساني وسط عالم مضطرب وغير يقيني. لحظة تمنيت لو أنها تدوم إلى الأبد. لكن المساء انتهى في النهاية. وقفنا، وتعانقنا، وافترق كل منا عائداً إلى حياته

ومع ذلك بقي شيء ما

أدركت لاحقاً أن ما شعرت به لم يكن حنيناً بالمعنى التقليدي، بل اعترافاً. اعترافاً بأن البيت لا يكمن بالضرورة في المكان أو الملكية أو الجغرافيا. البيت يتشكل من العلاقات واللقاءات. من تلك اللحظات النادرة التي يبطؤ فيها الزمن بما يكفي لكي نشعر أننا مرئيون حقاً

ولهذا أعود دائماً إلى القاهرة في كتاباتي. ليس لأنني أبحث عن مدينة ثابتة لم تتغير — فالقاهرة تتغير باستمرار، وأحياناً بصورة مؤلمة —بل لأن شوارعها ما تزال تحتوي على تلك النقاط الهشة من الاستمرارية العاطفية

وفي نهاية الأمسية خطرت لي أغنية أخرى “البيت هو انا و انت” ل هريشكيش هيرفاي:

البيت هو أنا وأنت

الأماكن تتغير وتتلاشى
لكن شيئاً واحداً يبقى حقيقياً
البيت هو أنا وأنت

بقيت هذه الكلمات ترافقني طويلاً بعد مغادرتي القاهرة

لأنه في ذلك المقهى العادي في المعادي، تراجع الضجيج تدريجياً إلى الخلفية، وخفتت ألوان المدينة، واختفى الحشد المحيط بنا، ولم يبق سوى ثلاثة أصدقاء قدامى يتحدثون عن حياتهم كما لو أن الزمن لم يمر أبداً

في تلك اللحظة العابرة عدت الي بيتي

القاهرة — المدينة التي غادرتها منذ زمن طويل — ما تزال تعيش بهدوء داخلي، محفوظة إلى الأبد في تلك الصورة المثالية بالأبيض والأسود خلف زجاج المقهى

قال أحدهم ذات مرة إن الوطن “ليس المكان الذي تريد أن تعيش فيه، بل المكان الذي تريد أن تموت فيه”. هذا غير صحيح

البيت ببساطة هو أنا وأنت

There is a song by Majida El Roumi, Ma’a Garida (With a Newspaper), written by Nizar Qabbani, that has stayed with me for years. A woman sits across from a man in a café. He removes a newspaper and a box of matches from his coat, orders coffee, dissolves two cubes of sugar in the cup, and without realizing it, transforms the emotional universe of the woman watching him. Nothing happens, really. No declaration of love. No dramatic event. No climax. Only a fleeting encounter lasting perhaps a few minutes. Yet within those few moments entire worlds unfold: longing, imagination, desire, memory, possibility, melancholy. The man eventually leaves, disappearing into the crowd, while the woman remains behind, alone with the newspaper he abandoned and the emotions he unknowingly awakened.

Then after a few moments,
Without seeing me,
Without knowing the longing that had overtaken me,
He took his coat and disappeared,
Vanished into the crowd,
Leaving behind the newspaper alone—
Alone, like me

What always fascinated me about this song was not simply its romantic yearning, but the way it understood the city. Cities are often made meaningful not through monuments or skylines, but through brief encounters whose significance exceeds their duration. A glance through a café window. A conversation that stretches late into the night. The familiarity of a face across a table. A moment suspended in time. Such moments linger within us long after cities and places fade away.

I thought about this song last January while sitting with two old friends at the Cilantro coffee shop in Maadi, the Street 9 branch.

Street 9 has always occupied a special place in my mental map of Cairo. It is Maadi’s main commercial drag, a place where the neighborhood in the evening and nighttime slows down and turns into a place of leisure and enjoyment. Cafés spill onto sidewalks. Young couples walk aimlessly beneath the lights. Students carrying laptops move from one coffee shop to another. Vendors linger at corners. Cars crawl through the traffic circle at the top of the street while fragments of conversation drift through the evening air.

Cilantro itself was unremarkable in many ways. A contemporary chain coffee shop like countless others scattered across Cairo. There was no waiter service. One had to queue at the cashier to order coffee and cake. Inside, students sat silently before glowing laptop screens. We chose instead to sit outside overlooking the roundabout where the lights of passing cars mixed with the soft yellow illumination of the cafés and shops surrounding us.

I arrived first. Then Nasser appeared. Shortly afterward Hussein joined us.

The three of us had first met as children at the German School in Cairo. From 1973 until 1981 we inhabited the same classrooms, shared the same jokes, fears, routines, and fragments of adolescence. Years drifted by. Lives diverged. Countries intervened. Careers unfolded. Families emerged. Parents passed. Yet there we were once again seated together as if time itself had returned us to our childhood.

At one point Hussein asked one of the waiters to take our picture. The photograph was taken from inside the café through the glass façade looking outward toward us seated together in conversation. I have looked at this image repeatedly since returning to the United States. There is something strangely cinematic about it. The reflections on the glass. The muted lights. The slight blur of movement in the background. The three of us leaning toward each other in deep concentration discussing one subject after another.

The image possesses what Roland Barthes might have called a punctum — a detail that wounds you unexpectedly, that captures you and holds you and does not let go. Looking at it, I realized that for a brief instant we had become children again. Of course we had aged. Our faces carried the patina of years that had passed, and history. But in that brief moment we were no longer older men navigating the anxieties of the present. We were once again classmates sharing stories after school.

And perhaps that is what cafés truly are.

Throughout my work, and especially in my upcoming book My Cairo: A Cartography of Belonging, I have returned repeatedly to the idea of the “third place,” a concept developed by sociologist Ray Oldenburg to describe spaces that exist between home and work: cafés, streets, clubs, bookstores, tea shops, parks. Places where belonging emerges informally through repeated encounters and shared rituals.

In Cairo these spaces carry extraordinary significance. They become extensions of domestic life. Temporary shelters from loneliness. Stages for memory and conversation. Moments of companionship amidst the overwhelming scale and turbulence of the city.

This was not my first memory associated with that particular coffee shop. I had met Nasser there years earlier after my father passed away in 2006. During visits to Cairo, I often worked inside while conducting research, resting between interviews, observations, and walks through the city. Like many cafés in Cairo, it slowly accumulated layers of personal history.

Back in the United States I spend considerable amounts of time in coffee shops as well. I meet doctoral students, colleagues, and faculty members. Sometimes I advise students struggling with dissertations or life decisions. Sometimes I simply sit alone working quietly for hours. Yet despite their comfort, these spaces rarely produce the same sensation. There remains a persistent feeling of estrangement — of being, as the phrase goes, a stranger in a strange land.

Perhaps because home is never merely a tangible, physical space.

This realization also brought to mind other works centered around conversation and fleeting encounters. My Dinner with Andre is a movie which consists almost entirely of two men speaking over dinner in a New York restaurant, yet through conversation an entire universe emerges. In Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris cafés become portals through time where the protagonist encounters writers, artists, and lost histories. The city transforms into a place of enchantment. Inspired perhaps by the Japanese book Before the Coffee Gets Cold which revolves around the possibility that a café might momentarily suspend time itself.

The opposite condition appears in the painting Nighthawks. Hopper’s diner is also illuminated at night, but there the figures remain isolated despite their proximity. Modern urbanity becomes alienation rather than connection.

Our table at Cilantro felt like the antithesis of Hopper’s world.

What the photograph captured was not simply friendship, but continuity in an age of fragmentation. A fleeting moment of human connection within a turbulent and uncertain world. A moment I wished would continue indefinitely. Yet eventually the evening ended. We stood, embraced, and walked away into separate lives once more.

Still, something endured.

I realized afterward that what I had experienced was not nostalgia in the conventional sense. It was recognition. Recognition that home does not necessarily reside in permanence, property, or geography. Home emerges through relationships and encounters. Through those rare moments when time briefly slows enough for us to feel fully seen.

This is why I keep returning to Cairo in my writing. Not because I seek an unchanged city — Cairo changes constantly, often painfully — but because scattered across its streets remain these fragile points of emotional continuity.

Toward the end of the evening, another song came to mind: “Home Is Me and You” by Hrishikesh Hirway.

Places change and fade away
But one thing that stays true
Home is me and you

These refrains stayed with me long after I left Cairo.

Because in that ordinary chain coffee shop in Maadi, the noise slowly receded into the background. The colors of the city were muted and desaturated. The surrounding crowd disappeared. And all that remained were three old friends talking about their lives as if no time had passed at all.

In that fleeting moment, I was home.

And Cairo — the city I left behind long ago — continued to live quietly inside me, preserved forever in that perfect black-and-white image behind the café glass storefront.

Home is me and you.

ثمة مدن تثير الإعجاب. وأخرى تظل عالقة في الذاكرة. وتنتمي برلين إلى الفئة الثانية. فهي مدينة تُحيِّر زائرها وتراوغه؛ مكانٌ لا يتراجع فيه الماضي تماماً، فيما يظل الحاضر فيه غير مكتمل على الدوام. وكل زيارة لها بدت أقل شبهاً بالوصول إلى مدينة يمكن الإحاطة بها بسهولة، وأكثر شبهاً بخوض رحلة مستمرة من الاكتشاف.

كان لقائي الأول ببرلين في سبعينيات القرن الماضي عندما كانت عائلتي تعيش في هانوفر. آنذاك بدت المدينة بعيدة وغامضة، كجزيرة محاطة بعالم سياسي آخر. كلما أعلن والدي أننا سنقود السيارة إلى برلين، أصبحت الرحلة نفسها جزءاً من التجربة. وبينما كنا نعبر ألمانيا الشرقية بسيارتنا المرسيدس، بدا المشهد الخارجي باهتاً ورمادياً، وكانت الأجواء مشحونة بالحذر والتوتر. ثم فجأة تظهر برلين نابضة بالحياة، وكأن أحدهم أعاد ضبط ألوان العالم. لم أكن أفهم سياسات الانقسام بعد، لكنني أدركت أن عبور الحدود قادر على تغيير إحساسنا بالمكان

بعد سنوات، عدت إلى برلين طالباً جامعياً قادماً من القاهرة ضمن رحلة نظمتها جمعية بيوت الشباب المصرية. أقمنا بالقرب من بحيرة فانزي، وقضينا أيامنا وأمسياتنا نتجول في المدينة. وفي إحدى الليالي، بقيت مع صديقين في وسط المدينة بعد توقف الحافلات عن العمل. وجدنا أنفسنا عالقين بالقرب من مركز أوروبا، نقضي الليل تحت أنظار كنيسة القيصر فيلهلم التذكارية، ذلك الأثر الذي خلفته الحرب العالمية الثانية. كان رجال الشرطة برفقة كلابهم من نوع الراعي الألماني يجوبون الشوارع الخالية بينما ننتظر بزوغ الفجر. لم يحدث شيء استثنائي، لكن تلك الليلة كشفت شيئاً جوهرياً عن برلين: مزيجها الفريد من القلق والحرية، واليقظة والإمكان

وخلال تلك الزيارة التقيت بصديق والدي القديم، حجازي، الذي نجح في بناء حياة مستقرة في برلين. استقبلني في شقته، حيث بدد عبق الطعام المصري المسافة الفاصلة بين ألمانيا والوطن. ومع مرور الزمن أدركت أن المدن لا تُفهم من خلال معالمها فقط، بل من خلال الناس الذين يعيشون فيها. كانت برلين حجازي مختلفة عن برلين المحطات والحياة الليلية؛ كانت مدينة للانتماء

وفي زيارة لاحقة عام 1986، تأكد لي الطابع الاستثنائي للمدينة. أثناء السفر بالقطار عبر ألمانيا الشرقية، صعد حراس مسلحون لتفتيش جوازات السفر والحقائب. حوّل حضورهم رحلة عادية إلى تذكير صارخ بالواقع السياسي. لكن ما إن وصلنا إلى محطة بانهوف تسو حتى دخلنا عالماً مختلفاً تماماً: مزدحماً، فوضوياً، وعالمياً. وخارج مركز أوروبا شاهدت مشادة بين مهاجرين جزائريين وأفارقة تطورت إلى عراك، بينما كان آخرون يضحكون ويلعبون ويرشون الماء في النافورة القريبة. وبعد دقائق ظهر عدد من النازيين الجدد للإبلاغ عن الحادث للشرطة. كان مشهداً لا يمكن أن ينتمي إلا إلى برلين، حيث يتجاور الفرح والتهديد في اللحظة نفسها

وعندما عدت عام 2004 أستاذاً للعمارة، بدت برلين على نحو مدهش كما عرفتها، رغم اختفاء الجدار. أكثر ما أثر فيّ آنذاك كان لقائي بامرأة مصرية قطعت رحلة أطول بكثير من رحلتي. كانت تنتظر في متحف تحت ضوء علوي ناعم، وعيناها تتطلعان عبر القرون. كانت نفرتيتي

وأمام تمثالها النصفي في المتحف الجديد شعرت بالفخر والانزعاج معاً. فقد أخذت برلين شيئاً مصرياً بامتياز وحولته إلى واحدة من أعظم كنوزها الثقافية. كان اللقاء تجسيداً لتناقضات المدينة: الإعجاب والاستحواذ، التكريم والفقدان. وقليل من المدن تجبر زائرها على مواجهة مثل هذه الأسئلة المعقدة

وتنعكس هذه التناقضات في عمارة برلين نفسها. فالنصب التذكاري للهولوكوست يحوّل الذاكرة إلى تجربة جسدية من الضياع واللايقين. أما المتحف اليهودي فيحوّل الغياب إلى شكل معماري. فيما ترمز قبة الرايخستاغ التي صممها نورمان فوستر إلى الشفافية فوق مبنى مثقل بتاريخ طويل. في كل مكان تبدو العمارة حواراً دائماً مع الذاكرة

وربما التقطت السينما روح برلين بصورة أكثر عمقاً. ففي فيلم «أجنحة الرغبة» لفيم فندرز، تظهر المدينة كما لو كانت تحت مراقبة ملائكة تحلق فوق أسطحها وشوارعها وتستمع إلى أفكار سكانها. أما فيلم «الاستحواذ» لأندريه زولافسكي فيكشف وجهاً أكثر ظلمة، مدينة مشبعة بالارتياب والانقسام. وما زلت أذكر إيزابيل أدجاني وهي تجوب الأنفاق والشوارع مطاردة بقوة غامضة. يقدم الفيلمان معاً صورة لبرلين بوصفها مدينة شعرية ومقلقة في آن واحد

لكن برلين ليست مدينة أشباح فقط. ففي عام 2007، وخلال مشاركتي في ندوة أكاديمية، زرت نهر شبريه وتعرفت إلى مقاومة السكان لمشروعات التطوير العقاري الكبرى. فقد احتل ناشطون موقعاً على ضفة النهر وحولوه إلى فضاء ثقافي نابض بالحياة عُرف باسم «يام»، امتلأ بالموسيقى والفن والحياة العامة. وعلى الرغم من الضغوط الهائلة نجحوا في ضمان حق الجمهور في الوصول إلى الواجهة النهرية. وقد كشف ذلك عن جانب آخر من برلين: مدينة ما زال سكانها يؤمنون بقدرتهم على تشكيل الفضاء الحضري بدلاً من الاكتفاء باستهلاكه

وربما لهذا السبب لا تزال برلين تفتنني. فعلى عكس المدن التي تسعى إلى الكمال، تحتضن برلين عدم الاكتمال. إنها لا تخفي ندوبها ولا تزيل تناقضاتها. فالتاريخ لا يزال مرئياً في الفراغات بين المباني، وفي الأطلال المحفوظة، وفي الأماكن التي كان يقف فيها شيء ما ثم اختفى

وفي آخر مساء لي هناك وقفت على جسر أوبرباوم أراقب الأضواء وهي تنعكس على مياه شبريه. كانت الترامات تعبر النهر، والدراجات الهوائية تمر بهدوء، فيما كانت المدينة تواصل همهمتها المعتادة. لم تبدُ برلين مدينة تنتمي بالكامل إلى الماضي أو الحاضر، بل شيئاً بينهما

وربما تكون هذه أعظم دروسها. فالمدن لا تحتاج إلى أن تكون مكتملة حتى تكون ذات معنى. أحياناً تكون شقوقها وتناقضاتها وحكاياتها غير المكتملة هي ما يجعلها عصية على النسيان

وفي الأسبوع المقبل سأعود إلى برلين من جديد، هذه المرة لإلقاء محاضرة في مركز الدراسات الشرقية الحديثة حول كتابي«الحداثة العربية: المدن والتاريخ والثقافة. وأجد نفسي أتساءل كيف سأرى المدينة بعد كل هذه السنوات. هل سأجد برلين رحلات الطفولة عبر ألمانيا الشرقية، وليالي محطة بانهوف تسو، ونفرتيتي، ونهر شبريه، والمتمردين الذين احتلوا ضفافه، والملائكة التي كانت تحلق فوق أسطحه؟ أم أن برلين أخرى ستكشف نفسها لي؟

لعل هذه هي هدية المدينة الدائمة: أنها لا تسمح لنفسها بأن تُعرف بالكامل. فكل زيارة تبدو أقل شبهاً بالعودة وأكثر شبهاً بلقاء جديد، فصل آخر في حوار مفتوح بين الذاكرة والتاريخ ومدينة تواصل إعادة اختراع نفسها دون أن تنجح تماماً في الإفلات من ماضيها

وآمل أن تكون نفرتيتي هناك، في انتظاري

Some cities impress. Others linger. Berlin belongs to the latter category. It is a city that confounds, a place where the past never quite recedes and the present remains perpetually unfinished. Every visit has felt less like arriving in a city that can be easily comprehended, and more like engaging in a process of discovery.

My first encounter with Berlin took place in the 1970s when my family lived in Hannover. At the time, the city felt distant and mysterious, an island surrounded by another political world. Whenever my father announced that we were driving to Berlin, the journey itself became part of the experience. Crossing East Germany, in our Mercedes Benz, the landscape seemed muted and gray, the atmosphere tense and cautious. Then suddenly Berlin would appear, vibrant and alive, as though someone had adjusted the contrast of the world. I did not yet understand the politics of division, but I understood that crossing borders could change how a place felt.

Years later, as a university student from Cairo, I returned to Berlin with the Egyptian Youth Hostel organization. We stayed near Wannsee (a lake) and spent our days and evenings wandering the city. One night, two friends and I remained downtown long after the buses had stopped running. We found ourselves stranded near the Europa Center, spending the night beneath the watchful presence of the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, now a relic damaged from World War II. Police officers accompanied by German Shepherds patrolled the empty streets while we waited for dawn. Nothing dramatic happened, yet the experience revealed something essential about Berlin: its mixture of unease and freedom, vigilance and possibility.

During that visit, I met my father’s old friend Hegazy, who had built a successful life in Berlin. He welcomed me into his apartment, where the smell of Egyptian food briefly dissolved the distance between Germany and home. Looking back, I realize that cities are often understood not through monuments but through people. Hegazy’s Berlin was different from the Berlin of train stations and nightlife. It was a city of belonging.

A later visit in 1986 reinforced Berlin’s peculiar character. Traveling by train through East Germany, armed guards entered the carriage to inspect passports and luggage. Their presence transformed an ordinary journey into a reminder of political realities. Yet upon arriving at Bahnhof Zoo, we entered a completely different world—crowded, chaotic, and cosmopolitan. Outside the Europa Center, I witnessed an argument between Algerian and African migrants, escalating into a fight while nearby people laughed, played, and splashed in a fountain. Moments later, neo-Nazis appeared to report the disturbance to the police. It was a scene that could only belong to Berlin: joy and menace existing side by side.

When I returned in 2004 as a professor of architecture, Berlin felt remarkably unchanged despite the disappearance of the Wall. What struck me most was an encounter with an Egyptian woman who had traveled much farther than I had. She waited in a museum, illuminated beneath a skylight, her gaze fixed across centuries. It was Nefertiti.

Standing before her in the Neues Museum, I felt both pride and discomfort. Berlin had taken something profoundly Egyptian and transformed it into one of its greatest treasures. The encounter captured the city’s contradictions: admiration and appropriation, reverence and loss. Few places force visitors to confront such complexities so directly.

Those contradictions are embedded in Berlin’s architecture. The Holocaust Memorial transforms remembrance into a physical experience of uncertainty and disorientation. The Jewish Museum turns absence into architectural form. Norman Foster’s Reichstag dome symbolizes transparency while standing atop a building burdened by history. Everywhere, architecture becomes a conversation with memory.

Cinema perhaps captures Berlin even more effectively. Wim Wenders’s Wings of Desire presents a city observed by angels drifting above rooftops and streets, listening to the private thoughts of its inhabitants. The film understands Berlin as a repository of longing. In contrast, Andrzej Żuławski’s Possession reveals a darker city, one shaped by paranoia and division. I remember vividly, the gorgeous Isabelle Adjani tormented by a dark force while traversing the city’s streets and tunnels. Together, the films portray Berlin as both poetic and unsettling.

Yet Berlin is not merely a city of ghosts. During a symposium in 2007, I visited the Spree River and learned about local resistance to corporate redevelopment. Activists had occupied a riverside site and transformed it into YAAM (Young African Art Market), a vibrant cultural space filled with music, art, and public life. Against considerable pressure, they successfully fought for public access to the riverfront. The episode revealed another side of Berlin: a city where citizens still believe they can shape urban space rather than simply consume it.

Perhaps this explains why Berlin continues to fascinate me. Unlike cities that seek perfection, Berlin embraces incompleteness. It does not conceal its scars or smooth over its contradictions. History remains visible in the gaps between buildings, in preserved ruins, in the spaces where something once stood.

On my last evening there, I stood on the Oberbaum Bridge watching the lights shimmer across the Spree. Trams crossed the river, cyclists passed by, and the city hummed with its familiar restlessness. Berlin seemed neither fully past nor fully present. It existed somewhere in between—a city still becoming.

Perhaps that is Berlin’s greatest lesson. Cities do not need to be whole to be meaningful. Sometimes it is their fractures, their uncertainties, and their unfinished stories that make them unforgettable.

I find myself wondering how I will experience the city after all these years. Will I still see the Berlin of childhood journeys through East Germany, of sleepless nights near Bahnhof Zoo, of Nefertiti and the Spree, of rebels occupying riverbanks and angels hovering above rooftops? Or will another Berlin reveal itself entirely?

Perhaps that is the city’s enduring gift: it never allows itself to be fully known. Each visit feels less like a return than a new encounter, another chapter in an unfinished conversation between memory, history, and a city that continues to reinvent itself without ever escaping its past.

And hopefully Nefertiti will be there waiting for me.

للوهلة الأولى، تبدو رواية “دق الطبول” جذابة للغاية كعمل ساخر. فكرتها جريئة حقًا: منتخب كرة القدم الوطني لإمارة خليجية لم يُذكر اسمها - دبي بلا شك - يتأهل لكأس العالم. فيصدر الحاكم على الفور أمرًا لجميع المواطنين بالرحيل إلى فرنسا، تاركًا المدينة في أيدي العمال المهاجرين. يصبح الخفي ظاهرًا. أولئك الذين بنوا المدينة، يرثونها الآن، لفترة وجيزة

إنها فكرة آسرة. ومع ذلك، عند قراءتي لها الآن، خاصة بعد كتابة “الحداثات العربية” ودراسة مدن الخليج عن كثب، وجدت نفسي أشعر بانزعاج متزايد - ليس من السخرية نفسها، بل مما يكمن وراءها

ومع ذلك، تبقى رواية “دق الطبول” جديرة بالقراءة، لأنها تكشف، ربما دون قصد، عن شيء أعمق. فالمدينة لا تنجو بفضل مواطنيها، بل بفضل المهاجرين الذين يدعمونها. الأبراج، والحدائق، والطرق، والمنازل، و إيقاع الحياة اليومية برمته: كل ذلك يعتمد على عمال يبقون مجهولين في الروايات الرسمية. تكمن مفارقة الرواية في أنه بمجرد رحيل المواطنين، لا تنهار المدينة، بل تستمر. هذه هي دبي التي كنت أواجهها باستمرار في أعمالي: تجمعات السطوة بعد نوبة عمل طويلة؛ مباريات الكريكيت في الأراضي المهجورة؛ مطاعم المهاجرين في الكرامة؛ الحياة العامة العفوية التي تتكشف في ظلال أفق المدينة المذهل. المدينة الخفية وراء المشهد.

إذا كانت رواية “دق الطبول” تنظر إلى الخليج من الخارج، فإن رواية “كائن مؤجل” تتحدث من الداخل، والفرق واضح في كل صفحة

قد تكون هذه الرواية من أكثر الروايات المؤثرة التي تناولت المدينة. ليست رياض المشاريع الضخمة أو الروايات الرسمية، بل رياض الشميسي. بيوت طينية. أزقة ضيقة. أسطح تتساقط عليها قطرات الماء عند الغسق. أطفال يركضون في أزقة متربة بينما تتسلل الموسيقى من مشغلات الكاسيت

تتتبع الرواية حياة خالد وعائلته وهم ينتقلون من الرياض القديمة إلى فيلا في الضواحي خلال طفرة النفط. يحقق المنزل الجديد حلمًا دام ثلاثين عامًا، ومع ذلك يصل فارغًا، “واقعًا ملموسًا، لكن بلا روح”. تُصوَّر الأحياء الطينية القديمة برقة بالغة. كانت الشوارع أهم من البيوت. كانت الأبواب نصف مفتوحة. اختلطت الأصوات. كان الجيران امتدادًا للعائلة. أصبحت الأزقة مسارح لتمرد الطفولة والحياة الاجتماعية.

أثناء قراءتي لهذه المقاطع، تذكرت مرارًا وتكرارًا الحجج التي طرحتها في كتابي عن الحداثة العربية. غالبًا ما جلب التحديث في المدن العربية تقدمًا ماديًا، ولكنه في الوقت نفسه أدى إلى تفكك النسيج الاجتماعي. لم يكن تحول الرياض - من أحياء طينية إلى فلل خرسانية، ومن حياة اجتماعية صاخبة إلى عزلة خلف الجدران - مجرد تغيير معماري، بل كان إعادة تشكيل للحياة اليومية. وقد عبّر العتيق عن ذلك بدقة متناهية. فالعائلة لا تترك وراءها منزلًا فحسب، بل “وجوهًا، وأحداثًا، وصورًا، وذكريات، وأحلامًا، وأغانٍ”. في الضاحية الجديدة، لا أصوات، ولا جيران، فقط جدران عالية وصمت مطبق. تُوصف الرياض بأنها “مدينة لا تدري أهي متدينة أم فاسدة” - أشبه ببوتقة ضغط من الكلمات غير المنطوقة. إنها استعارة رائعة للمجتمعات التي تواجه الحداثة بسرعة هائلة.

لم أستطع إلا أن أتذكر رواية “مدن الملح” أثناء قراءة الروايتين. لا تمتلك أي منهما الحجم الملحمي أو الطموح التاريخي الشامل الذي تميزت به رواية عبد الرحمن منيف. لكنهما معًا تكشفان عن شذرات من قصة الخليج التي طرحها: النفط، والتحول، والتهجير، والتمزق الاجتماعي، والتفاعل بين التقاليد والحداثة

لكنهما تكشفان أيضًا عن تباين في كيفية النظر إلى مدن الخليج. تنظر إحدى الروايتين إلى الخارج، إلى المظاهر والإسراف؛ بينما تنظر الأخرى إلى الداخل، إلى الذاكرة والفقد. تعيد إحداهما إنتاج الصور النمطية؛ بينما تُضفي الأخرى طابعًا إنسانيًا. تختزل إحداهما الخليج إلى مجموعة من الكليشيهات؛ بينما ترفض الأخرى ذلك

هذا التباين مهم. فهو يُشكّل ما يُكتب، وما يُترجم، وما يُقرأ عالميًا. وهو مهم أيضًا لفهم مدن الخليج لنفسها

لهذا السبب، تبدو هاتان الروايتان بمثابة رفيقتين لكتابي “الحداثات العربية”. يُجادل الكتاب مرارًا وتكرارًا بأن الحداثة في المدن العربية لا يُمكن فهمها من خلال المباني فقط. بل يجب قراءتها من خلال الحياة اليومية، والأدب، والذاكرة، والسينما، والأماكن العامة. وهذا ما تفعله هاتان الروايتان تحديدًا.

كما تحمل هذه الأعمال درسًا قيّمًا لمخططي المدن وصناع القرار وسكانها في منطقة الخليج. لا ينبغي الاستهانة بالأدب باعتباره مجرد خيال منفصل عن الواقع الحضري، بل هو بمثابة صدى يعكس الواقع، وقد يكون مشوهًا أحيانًا، وغير مريح أحيانًا أخرى، ولكنه مع ذلك يكشف الكثير

One of the recurring preoccupations of this blog — and of my broader work — is the gap between the city of spectacle and the city actually lived. The city of brochures and skylines versus the city of memories, migrant labor, dusty streets, half-open doors, markets, silences, and ordinary encounters. Literature often reveals this hidden city better than architecture or planning documents ever could. Recently I returned to two novels I had been meaning to write about for some time: Drumbeat by the Egyptian writer Mohamed El-Bisatie and Life on Hold by the Saudi novelist Fahd al-Atiq. They are set in Dubai and Riyadh respectively. They are very different books. And together they form an unexpected dialogue — about outsiders and insiders, fantasy and memory, and the uneasy encounter with modernity.

At first glance, Drumbeat is almost irresistible as satire. The premise is genuinely audacious: the national football team of an unnamed Gulf emirate — unmistakably Dubai — qualifies for the World Cup. The ruler promptly orders all citizens to depart for France, leaving the city in the hands of migrant workers. The invisible become visible. Those who built the city now, briefly, inherit it.

It is a compelling premise. Yet reading it now, especially after writing Arab Modernism(s) and studying Gulf cities closely, I found myself increasingly unsettled — not by the satire itself, but by what lies beneath it.

El-Bisatie’s Gulf is populated by clichés that have long circulated in segments of the Arab intelligentsia, particularly in Egypt: the Gulf as excessive wealth, as moral ambiguity, as sexual repression concealing secret depravity, its people as nouveau riche beneficiaries of oil who lack authenticity or culture. Beneath the surface lies a subtle hierarchy: we — bearers of civilization, history, and intellectual tradition — observe them, the suddenly wealthy desert newcomers.

This attitude has long haunted Gulf representation. It is often unspoken, sometimes unconscious, but present. Gulf society gets reduced to fantasy, exoticism, or moral spectacle. The city becomes a stage for repression and excess rather than a place where real people are struggling sincerely with unprecedented social change.

And yet Drumbeat remains worth reading — because it accidentally reveals something deeper. The city survives not because of its citizens but because migrants sustain it. The towers, gardens, roads, homes, the entire rhythm of daily life: all of it depends on workers who remain nameless in official narratives. The irony of the novel is that once citizens leave, the city does not collapse. It continues. This is the Dubai I kept encountering in my own work: the Satwa gatherings after a long shift; the cricket games in abandoned lots; the migrant restaurants in Karama; the improvised public life unfolding in the shadows of spectacular skylines. The hidden city behind the spectacle.

If Drumbeat views the Gulf from outside, Life on Hold speaks from within — and the difference is palpable on every page.

Fahd al-Atiq’s Riyadh may be one of the most moving urban portraits of the city I have read. Not the Riyadh of megaprojects or state narratives, but Riyadh of Shumaisi. Mud houses. Narrow lanes. Roofs sprinkled with water at dusk. Children running through dusty alleys while music drifts from cassette players.

The novel traces Khaled’s life as his family moves from old Riyadh into a suburban villa during the oil boom. The new house fulfills a dream thirty years in the making — and yet it arrives empty, “a tangible reality, but without a soul.” The old mud neighborhoods are rendered with extraordinary tenderness. Streets mattered more than houses. Doors remained half open. Voices mixed. Neighbors were extensions of family. The lanes became theaters of childhood rebellion and social life.

Reading these passages, I was reminded repeatedly of arguments I developed in Arab Modernism(s). Modernization in Arab cities often brought material advancement while simultaneously dissolving social worlds. Riyadh’s transformation — from mud neighborhoods to concrete villas, from dense social life to isolation behind walls — was not simply architectural change. It was a reconfiguration of everyday existence. Al-Atiq captures this with precision. The family leaves behind not just a house but “faces, events, images, memories, dreams, songs.” In the new suburb there are no voices, no neighbors, only high walls and silence. Riyadh is described as “a city that doesn’t know if it is pious or decadent” — a pressure cooker of unspoken words. It is a remarkable metaphor for societies confronting modernity at overwhelming speed.

I could not help but think of Cities of Salt while reading both novels. Neither possesses Munif’s epic scale or sweeping historical ambition. But together they reveal fragments of the Gulf story he introduced: oil, transformation, displacement, social rupture, and the encounter between tradition and modernity.

But they also expose an asymmetry in how Gulf cities continue to be seen. One narrative looks outward at spectacle and excess; the other inward at memory and loss. One reproduces stereotypes; the other humanizes. One reduces the Gulf to a set of clichés; the other refuses to.

This asymmetry matters. It shapes what gets written, what gets translated, what gets read internationally. And it matters for how Gulf cities understand themselves.

These novels feel like companions to Arab Modernism(s) for this reason. That book argues repeatedly that modernism in Arab cities cannot be understood solely through buildings. It must be read through ordinary lives, through literature, memory, cinema, and everyday spaces. These novels do precisely that.

They also carry a lesson for Gulf planners, decision-makers, and residents. Literature should not be dismissed as fiction detached from urban reality. It is feedback. A mirror. Sometimes distorted, sometimes uncomfortable, but revealing nevertheless.

Drumbeat reminds us of those who sustain the city while remaining invisible. Life on Hold reminds us what is lost when modernization dissolves community.

The challenge for Gulf cities today is therefore not simply to build more. It is to build differently: cities that remember; cities that include migrants not as temporary labor but as urban citizens; cities that preserve social life alongside development; cities where modernization does not require forgetting.

A city for all. Not just for the few.

I still remember my first encounter with the Sha’abi house.

When I arrived in Al Ain in 1997, the city appeared to me as a strange urban landscape suspended between worlds. There were modern roads, roundabouts, shopping centers, and carefully planned neighborhoods spreading across the desert. Yet embedded within this modern urban order were modest single-story houses that seemed almost out of place—quiet compounds with shaded courtyards, boundary walls, satellite dishes, improvised extensions, water tanks, gardens, parked cars, and traces of everyday life spilling gently into the street.

At first glance they appeared ordinary.

But I could not stop looking at them.

These were the UAE’s Sha’abi houses—the “People’s Houses”—introduced during the formative years of the federation under Sheikh Zayed as part of an ambitious social and political project. Intended to settle Bedouin communities and provide citizens with dignified modern housing, they represented far more than a state housing program. They embodied a promise: that modernity could coexist with belonging, family, memory, and everyday life.

What fascinated me most was not their architectural form alone, but what happened to them afterwards.

Over time, these houses were transformed by their inhabitants. Walls shifted. Rooms were added. Courtyards were enclosed. Majlis spaces expanded. Decorative details appeared. Kitchens relocated. Staircases emerged where none had existed before. Gardens became social worlds. The houses adapted to changing families, aspirations, economic realities, and personal desires.

They became living archives.

In many ways, the Sha’abi house resisted the rigidity of modernist planning. While the state imagined a standardized dwelling, residents slowly individualized and reinterpreted these homes through everyday acts of occupation and modification. The result was something profoundly moving: a form of architecture that was neither entirely planned nor entirely improvised, but constantly negotiated between official vision and lived reality.

For years, I carried these observations within me, promising myself that one day I will explore these houses further. I was particularly interested in the work of German photographers and artists Bernd and Hilla Becher. Over a span of 40 years they captured what they referred to as “anonymous sculpture”: extensive series of water towers, blast furnaces, coal mine tipples, framework houses of mine workers, and other vernacular industrial architecture. The Bechers produced impeccable black and white photographs, recording shadowless front and side elevation views of their subjects. Arranging these matched photographs in a grid, they produced what they called “typologies,” which grouped buildings by function, underscoring the similarities and differences between structures. I wanted to do something similar for the UAE’s Sha’abi homes

I photographed neighborhoods. I walked through streets at different times of the day. I spoke to residents. I observed details that others overlooked—the texture of walls exposed to decades of desert heat, the layering of additions, the careful placement of chairs outside entrances during the evening, the rhythms of family life unfolding behind gates. Slowly, I began to realize that the Sha’abi house was not simply a housing typology. It was a lens through which one could understand the social and cultural transformation of the UAE itself.

That long journey eventually led to the UAE National Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2016.

The exhibition attempted to capture the essence of the Sha’abi house not as a nostalgic artifact, but as a living and evolving environment. Visitors moved through the pavilion as though moving through the rooms of a house itself. Scaled models revealed the accumulated layers of occupation and transformation. Analytic diagrams mapped spatial evolution. Typological studies examined patterns of adaptation. Translucent massing models suggested both fragility and permanence.

Yet what moved people most were not the drawings or diagrams alone.

It was the recognition that these modest houses carried stories.

Stories of migration from desert settlements into planned urban environments. Stories of newly formed families. Stories of social mobility, adaptation, hospitality, and memory. Stories embedded within architecture itself.

Years later, in 2024, I returned once again to these neighborhoods through a research grant supported by the Zayed National Museum.

But this return felt different.

The UAE had changed dramatically since my first arrival. Entire districts had disappeared. Cities had become denser, taller, faster, and more spectacular. Urban discourse increasingly revolved around iconic skylines, global branding, museums, luxury developments, and artificial islands. Yet amid all this transformation, the Sha’abi neighborhoods remained present—sometimes neglected, sometimes threatened, sometimes transformed beyond recognition, but still deeply embedded within the emotional geography of the country.

Revisiting them after nearly three decades became an intensely personal experience.

Some houses had vanished. Others stood frozen in time. Many had been further subdivided, expanded, or adapted to accommodate multiple generations. Many were in various states of demolition, their colorful interior walls exposed as if they are an architectural cross section, revealing traces of hidden rooms. Again and again, I encountered houses that revealed how deeply architecture and everyday life had become intertwined. Rooms had been added gradually over time, courtyards enclosed, entrances modified, and outdoor spaces transformed to accommodate changing family structures, social expectations, and daily rituals. What emerged was not simply a collection of buildings, but biographies written through architecture itself.

This website grows out of that journey.

It is not merely an archive.

Nor is it simply a research project.

It is an attempt to preserve, document, and understand a disappearing urban and architectural world before it fades completely beneath the pressure of redevelopment, nostalgia, and selective memory.

As you move through the pages, you will encounter photographs, drawings, maps, essays, films, interviews, and field observations collected over many years. You will see houses in different states of transformation. You will encounter stories of residents and neighborhoods. You will witness the tension between permanence and change, between official planning and lived adaptation.

But more importantly, I hope you will begin to see these houses differently.

The Sha’abi house is often dismissed as modest, repetitive, or architecturally insignificant when compared to the spectacle of Gulf skylines and global mega-projects. Yet its true importance lies precisely in its ordinariness. It is within these everyday spaces that identity is negotiated, memory is formed, and belonging takes root.

In many ways, this project is also about my own relationship with cities.

For decades I have written about modernism, urban transformation, spectacle, and erasure across the Arab world—from Cairo and Beirut to Riyadh, Doha, Dubai, and Abu Dhabi. Again and again, I found myself returning to a simple question: how do ordinary people inhabit and reshape the spaces imposed upon them?

The Sha’abi house offers one of the clearest and most beautiful answers.

Its story is not one of architectural perfection but a story of adaptation and improvisation. Of families creating their own spaces within standardized plans and architecture becoming human.

And perhaps that is why these houses never left me.

Even after all the years, exhibitions, books, research projects, and travels, I still find myself drawn back to them—not only as an architect and urban researcher, but as someone searching for traces of how cities become meaningful through everyday life.

One encounter in particular stayed with me.

During my fieldwork I met Rashad, a resident who welcomed me warmly into his majlis. Inside, surrounded by his friends, the room became more than an architectural space; it became a social world. Conversation, hospitality, memory, and companionship filled the majlis, revealing how the Sha’abi house continued to sustain rituals of gathering and belonging even as the city around it changed.

What stayed with me most was the moment I photographed Rashad in his majlis with his falcons. The scene carried a quiet intensity: the host with his treasured possession, looking proudly into the camera revealing the accumulated presence of a life lived within and through the house. It captured something I had been searching for throughout this entire journey: the inseparability of architecture, memory, identity, and everyday life. The Sha’abi house was never merely shelter. It was a setting for rituals, hospitality, friendship, family histories, and deeply personal attachments that could not be measured through plans or diagrams alone.

Rashad told me as I was about to leave that whenever I am in Abu Dhabi, this is my home too. It was a humble gesture of generosity that showed me the essence of Emirati culture, and how dignity and humanity pervade these ordinary landscapes.

In a region often obsessed with spectacle, speed, and constant reinvention, the Sha’abi house reminds us that cities are ultimately shaped not by iconic skylines, but by the quiet accumulation of everyday life. Behind boundary walls and improvised additions lies an urban history rarely celebrated in glossy brochures or global headlines—a history of adaptation, intimacy, resilience, and memory.

And maybe that is what drew me to these houses from the very beginning.

Not simply their form.

But the multitude of stories they contained.

This chapter from my book “Arab Modernism(s)” examines the urban and architectural development of Amman through the lenses of modernism, displacement, and socio-spatial division. Unlike many Arab capitals with long-established identities, Amman is a city shaped by arrivals—waves of migration, refugee movements, and a continually evolving national narrative. The chapter traces four architectural phases, from early syntheses of regional traditions and Ottoman forms, through post-independence modernist ambitions, to neoliberal megaprojects and contemporary regeneration efforts.

Key figures such as Jafar Tukan, Sayed Karim, and Ammar Khammash appear alongside landmark projects including the Jordan National Bank, the University of Jordan, and Al-Hussein Youth City—each reflecting aspirations for progress and public life. Yet Amman’s transformation has also produced stark inequalities. Developments such as the Abdali District and the Jordan Gate Towers illustrate how neoliberal urbanism, driven by speculative investment and Gulf capital, has deepened the divide between West and East Amman.

Through literary and cinematic references—including “The Alleys” and “Tale of a City” by Abdulrahman Munif—the chapter foregrounds everyday experiences embedded in rooftops, alleyways, and informal settlements. It argues that Amman’s future lies not in imported models of exclusivity, but in embracing its plural histories and fostering inclusive development. Modernism in Amman, though fragmented, remains a framework for reimagining the city as a shared and evolving home.

In Rabat, colonial and postcolonial planning continue to enforce exclusionary patterns, while contemporary megaprojects such as the Bouregreg River Development deepen these divides under the guise of modernization. Casablanca, Morocco’s economic hub, has experienced rapid urbanization and the proliferation of informal settlements, prompting state-led interventions like the “Villes sans Bidonvilles” program. Yet these efforts often displace the urban poor without addressing the structural roots of informality and exclusion. Through the case of Carrières Centrales, the chapter illustrates how colonial-era social housing became a site of resistance and contested urban space, while tramway projects—intended to integrate marginalized districts—have at times accelerated gentrification and displacement.

By weaving in literary and cinematic representations, including works by Nabil Ayouch, the chapter highlights how cultural narratives challenge official visions of progress. Ultimately, Moroccan urbanism emerges as a continuum—from colonial segregation to neoliberal spectacle—where modernization frequently produces and manages exclusion. The chapter calls for reimagining urban development to prioritize equity, social inclusion, and the everyday lives of marginalized communities. Link in story.

While preservation initiatives and mapping projects play an important role, the chapter warns that modernism can easily be flattened into nostalgia, and even appropriated by neoliberal urban agendas.

A key distinction emerges between modernism as an architectural language and modernity as a lived socio-cultural condition. Buildings acquire meaning not through form alone, but through everyday use, memory, and social performance. The chapter therefore calls for a clear-eyed reckoning—neither nostalgic defense nor wholesale rejection—moving beyond iconic structures toward understanding how architecture has shaped, and been shaped by, lived urban realities. Cities rarely arrive as finished ideas. We encounter them in fragments — a street corner glimpsed from a bus window, a façade remembered long after it has vanished, a courtyard shaped by everyday rituals. Over time, these fragments accumulate into something larger: memory, belonging, and sometimes loss.

This short film, developed alongside Arab Modernism(s), traces modernism’s unfinished journey across Arab cities — a project that promised progress, order, and clarity, yet repeatedly collided with lived reality. Ultimately, it asks a simple but urgent question: not what modernity looks like, but who it is for — and who has been left to live with its consequences.
